I have over 40 (50?) hours of playtime. I have experienced 2-3 dozen crashes in that time frame. Suddenly today I can no longer launch the game as it crashes at launch. Verifying integrity of files didn't resolve it. Updating the NVIDIA driver from Game Ready Driver 451.67 to the hotfix of 451.85 didn't resolve it. Restarting Steam didn't resolve it. Restarting my PC didn't resolve it.
  • CPU: i9-9900k (Stock)
  • GPU: ASUS Strix 2080 TI OC (Stock)
    • GPU Driver: 451.85
  • RAM: 64 GB Trident Z Royal 3200 MHz (XMP profile enabled to use the full 3200 MHz)
  • Motherboard: Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero (WI-FI)
  • Game Drive: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB (SSD)
  • Monitor: UN65KS8000 (65" Samsung TV)
I didn't change anything between yesterday (when I could play the game although it would crash after a while) through today (when I can't play the game as it now immediately crashes on startup before even opening the game window) other than finally applying the July 9th Steam Client update.

Sorry, I was hoping to post before asshats jump in with "WELL, IT'S NOT CRASHING FOR ME"-itis.

Yes, I'm getting crashes too, about once every four hours. It's a well known issue that this port is not stable and GG is working on it as we speak.

In the meanwhile, you may want to install MSI Afterburner to track memory as you play the game, disable your steam overlay, close all other programs (ideally restart) before you start the game, and save frequently as you play.

I applied the hex editor fix to the .exe from PCgamingwiki, updated to the latest nvidia hotfix driver, resized my pagefile, and rebuilt my cache. This fixed all crashes for me.

Hi guys, the same thing happened to me.

Can you guys try this?

1. Disable steam cloud update for HZD
2. Go to your save folder mine is in Documents\Horizon Zero Dawn\Saved Game
3. Backup the entire save folder somewhere
4. Go to "Documents\Horizon Zero Dawn\Saved Game\profile" and delete the content
5. Run the game again

step by step

Right click horizon zero dawn in your library. Click on properties. Go under updates, and at the bottom there should be a check for steam cloud updates. Uncheck it

On the windows search bar search for Documents . Go under horizon zero dawn. Go under saved games. Find the profile folder and move the profile folder to the recycling bin.

The game should start up after this is done. Once the game started up, you can go back into horizon zero dawn properties<updates<and check the box again for steam cloud updates.

Holy crap, that worked! I didn't have to even restart the game as it didn't affect my saves. I just backed up the Save folders (just in case), deleted the profile folder, launched the game (it did its first launch optimizations), fixed my game settings (they were all changed), and then loaded my save file that was still there. Thanks for this!

If you cannot find any folder. Try other drive C D OR any other
My steam is installed on D: My games are on E: took me a while to locate where it was.
So try documents in C: D: E: and keep going as many u have. Documents hahaha must be there somewhere. Is not the same saved games inside steam folder.
