You have to clear Cauldron Zeta first, then it is possible.

Whats that? a Place or mission?

Cauldrons are places (and when you go there, they also turn into missions IIRC) ... kinda like dungeons with an end boss and as a reward to learn to override new machines.

There's only three mountable machines in the base game (Chargers, Strider and another one I don't remember right now), the other ones turn friendly and fight other machines when overrided - comes in handy when you want to create some chaos.

There are hilarious videos on Youtube of people actually riding a Thunderjaw ... well it's more like a rodeo :P

Maybe jumping on its back and shooting the ropecaster?

Chargers, Striders and Broadheads are the three machines that can be used as mounts in HZD. ;)

As for the OP, no, Thunderjaws cannot be ridden, though sometimes you can manage to jump onto the back of one for a rather brief amount of time.

Well if you mean tame by feeding it some icecream from your hand and be friends with it.... no. The game unfortunately does not provide that option.

If you mean override, yes. Cauldron Zeta.

The usefulness of overriding drastically decreases as you enter frozen wilds. All daemonic enemies. Bigger badder and you can't override them.

Not having a taming system in this game feels like a missed oportunity.
Far Cry Primal did it masterfully , and this game had everything to do the same , as good or even better . Come on , hackable wild robot animals , the thing is almost done by itself .

But i read an interview were the devs said it would deviates from their vision for the game and Alloy's character , so i think the they did the right thing staying true to the game they wanted to do. I understand and respect them .

What are you talking about?

You can OVERRIDE (= tame) _every_ single machine type, provided it's not Corrupted or Demonic. Hell, they let you even override two Fireclaws in The Frozen Wilds.

But because these are _machines_ with programming, of course the 'taming' isn't "Here, kitty, have some kibble!" but rather "I'm gonna send your CPU on a wild-goose chase by flooding it with specially designed data."

I think what he means with "taming" is having a pet that follows you around.
Honestly, a non-sentient machine makes for a rather crappy pet.
I guess having a Sawtooth follow you into towns like a lapdog and scaring the living daylight out of the common folks would be fun at first, but I fear it would get old realy fast.
Other than that, it would be like draging your microwave behind you on a piece of string...

I'd rather be able to tame one of the foxes in the woods. Though then I'd have to finde me a vet to have it's scent glands removed. Because foxes stink like hell...

That's somewhat what i meant .

I'm talking about having a dedicated companion system.
Think something like Far Cry Primal , you have a list of animals you can tame , each one have unique habilits and stats ,they can do stealth kills , fight at your side against enemies , some you can ride and you have a bird that serves as scout , tag enemies and even throw bombs . They can be called anytime , wherever you are , and can be dismissed at any moment .
There are even Legendary animals to fight and tame . I think it's the closest we will ever get to a "realistic" take on Pokemon .

So , i think with the hacking skills that are already on the game , it would be simple to implement such a system , but the devs adressed the issue in an interview , like i said in my previous post and i totally understand and respect their opinions, i think they did the right thing following their vision for the game instead of given in to external demands so , tho i'm kinda sad , i'm fine with that .

*Almost* every machine type. You can't override Faro machines (i.e. corruptors and deathbringers)
