Ancient armor, a game changer
I stay back and snipe, or that's what I have been doing. I worked through the arduous quest line to get the ancient armor and that changed the game. I strolled out into a field with three behemoths and took them down with my spear. It took me a little time but not nearly as long as it has taken me to put down a Thunderjaw with a bow. I'm not so much a jump in and mix it up with large beasts kind of guy but I can now... Really like this game.

Yes it is especially if you get it at very early, I got mine when I'm level 18 and since then everything is much easier to deal with.
There's a trick to get it at early, I watched a video on youtube here's the link to the video

Wow. I would have, and did, give up long before that series of jumps was completed. I tried and tried to find a way up that wall and then went to youtube for a look. When I saw the ladder I figured that was the only way. I was a level 35 or so at the time. Does this "jump" as shown in the video require a certain perk or perks?

The only perks you need is "patience" and "persistent" because that jump is very tricky and kinda hard, took me a few minutes to get up there but it was worth it.
By the default yes the ladder is the proper way to get up there but can't wait to get OP lol

If you use trainers or cheat engine, you can literally have this armor the moment the map opens up for you for good.

Try the tirck in the video on youtube that I've mentioned before. You can access it using Strider

The story will eventually let you back in. You have to be let back in, in order to find out what's behind that Door with the Mysterious Voice of God, you know?

I don't yet have the ancient armor. Currently lv24 doing the main story around Meridian. I suppose you need to go quite a bit into the story if you don't use shortcuts. As this is my first play through I will go the normal way I think :)

I was in the thirties when I got the armor. There are a string of main quests each leading to the next that lead up to the power cell and armor. Once you see and complete Curse of Darkness, these quests follow: Deep Secrets of the Earth, Terror of the Sun, and The Heart of Nora. Then comes The Mountain that Fell, this last is your ticket into Gaia where you get the last power cell. From there you simply go collect the armor. You have probably already seen it? You don't need to complete any of those to see it but you can't get in to access it until you get the last power cell. I'm not a fan of using trainers or cheats to make the story easier. This main quest line will take you to about 55% main story completion. Then you can put a hold on any more as you do whatever suits you. I'm now just starting to explore the Wild Frozens at level 43, I think I'm a level 43. I can't believe I put down three behemoths at the same time with just my spear.

I am still n0b in this world. I honestly love this world more than most other games I have playhed. And there is some much to do. I am trying to kill those fricking flying birds right now. I do nto have gear for them.

For all who know this series, this makes me feel like what I am doing right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtGL2Tqfdws&list=RDMMwiZJP_XLmrQ&index=5&ab_channel=DRKoncerthuset

I was at about level 30 (had spent time investing in weapons, armor, collectibles and skills) and then did Makers End quest to get the 3rd battery. At that point, most of my time was being spent gathering health resources (despite having skills associated with that).

The cycle of heal-quest-heal began to wear on me so I used the 'back doors' into Gaia Prime and the Graveyard to grab the last two batteries. You still fight some pretty mean beasts so it was not a cake-walk to get to either place. I knew where the armor was, as I had stumbled upon it early in the game.

I am still a bit combat challenged although I am improving. The new armor was a game changer for me... I am now fearless and relaxed and can take more time perfecting my strategy for each machine type. I am exploring more areas and having much more fun as an adventurer! I am experiencing more of the narrative and really love the story as it unwinds.
