General problem, plastic when wet :-)

This is not a message to bash or mock the graphics quality of Horizons Zero Dawn. I actually like 95% of the graphics and the quality of it. This is more like a common problem even these days of good game graphics.

Why does human faces and/or skins look like plastic when they are supposed to be wet like in the picture here:

This happens basically in every game. Am I playing an android, a sister to commander Data, well even Data looked more realistic :P

Wet surfaces are incredibly complex to render. "make it shiny" is the general cop out.

True, but skin would look more realistic if there was no effect added at all. Rather than this "Sister of Mr. Data" renderer.

RE2:Remake does a pretty decent job of it using the subsurface scattering effect.

Still a bit overly shiny, but, definitely better than plastic.

Once ray-tracing becomes cheap enough/GPUs become more powerful, maybe then we can get a proper "wet look" in our games.

Until then, what you see is what you'll get across many games everywhere.

I think if devs left the skin alone and were able to make the hair look wet, that would be a lot more convincing.

Skin and clothes ... Aloy plunge into the river ans come out as dry as before!

Take the clothes off :-). I noticed today that there's a mod in Nexus which makes Aloy fully naked. It's quite pr0n tho.
