Riding Beasts
Noob here, but I am having issues with controlling those animals that you can ride. Once aboard, they either saunter along, slower than Aloy can walk or they speed up and charge into dangerous situations. Stopping them or getting them to change direction is a major hassle.

So has anyone more experienced, any advice on the best way to control these creatures/machines.

Hi, Julie!
I confess, I had the same issue. This is the only game, in which I don't like mount riding. I ended up just running, it proved to be overall less irritating.

Generally you have two keys:
1. Sprint - (I use Shift for this) - hold it or press it a few times subsequently to speed up
2. Slow - (I use Alt for this - same key as Dodge) - for slowing down or stopping

Directional keys serve mostly as direction change.

The machine will also slow down on obstacles...

I just run or fast travel.

Your choice, do what works best for you!

To stop it use Ctrl
I found it harder to control the mount when using M&K but easier when using controller, changing direction using M&K will make it suddenly stop before turn or it makes a turn too much almost make a U-turn but when using controller it's way easier and makes turn more smoother.
And yes it always run towards the danger situation also it will slow down if the path is blocked or near other hostile machines and I hate that because I want it just run pass them.

Thanks both. Then at least I know that it is not me.

I guess that I will stick to running and fast travel then.

I swear controlling mounts was a much smoother experience in PS4. Running and fast traveling would be the best way to move around in PC. However, mounts do follow the dirt roads when in sprint mode. You can watch Aloy as she goes up the hills and along the cliffside and such. I use this occasionally whenever I want to feel immersed in the world. It's a nice little experience, you should try it.

As General Rambo mentioned it seemed easier on the PS4. I gave it a try with the keyboard and mouse as that's been fine with all other PC games for me. But this, I gave in and switched to the controller from the PS4 (was simply plug and play). Like everyone I also struggled with the mounts . . . but after you get used to riding them, there are times when they rock. And as an added bonus, there are some mountainous/rocky places they will go where Aloy cannot. They also fight as an ally with you.
Also in the settings there in an option for the mount to loosely follow paths automatically which will make steering feel off at high speed. :cybereye:
