The war bow can use shock, freeze and corruption ammo. These apply said elements really fast, but deal 0 "tear" and almost no "normal" damage. That being said, you will want to apply mods that increase shock, freeze or corruption to increase their effectiveness, so it requires only 1-2 shots to apply these effects on even medium/large machines.
The sharpshooter bow uses ammo with high normal damage and high tear damage, so you should apply mods that increase damage or tear.
Scan every type of machine you come across and read their description in your notebook. Check their strengths and weaknesses so you know where to aim and what type of ammo to use.
Also be aware that you can increase your quiver capacity in the crafting menu (and other carrying capacities)
Once you get the shadow hunter bow with hardpoint arrows you will want to use 2 damage and 1 fire coil. The hardpoint arrows do a lot of damage so make the most of them when you shoot 3 arrows at once.
I have beaten New Game on Ultra Hard so I have a pretty good idea of what works well against enemies.
