CPU Temperature high during Horizon Zero Dawn
Hey Guys,
I just upgraded my CPU to a I7 10700k and I noticed while playing Horizon Zero Dawn (ultra settings) the temperature would reach up to about 90-95 degrees Celsius.
The fan I have is a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. Is this something I should worry about or is that fine?

That's approaching very, very close to the T_junction temperature for your CPU so no it isn't fine.

For the record, the Hyper 212 EVO is an entry level aftermarket cooler and you have a high end CPU (which boosts up to 5.0 GHz). You should either underclock your CPU or get a better cooling solution.

Might not be a bad idea to replace that 212 with something beefier.

It's got a max TDP of 150W if memory serves, and a 10700k would blow past that under heavy load like this game.

Thanks for the info guys. I had a feeling I would have to look for a new fan.

Do you have any recommendations for a fan? I have a BitFenix Comrade with a max CPU fan height of 160mm
Seamus Sep 20, 2020 @ 7:15am
Dang. That 160mm max height hurts a little. My usual suggestions are a few mm above that(162 and 165mm respectively). And looking at the specs for your case, it's not compatible with a 240mm AIO.

You MIGHT be able to work a 120mm AIO like a corsair H60, as those are generally just attached to the 120mm exhaust fan slot on cases, and you've got one of those.

Noctua has a single tower twin fan cooler that's only 158mm, might not be enough for a 10700k oc but much better than what you got now. that's cutting it close but might be worth a look https://noctua.at/en/nh-u12a/specification. also the nh-d15s but that sits at 160 with the fans, this would be much more appropriate for your cpu.
looking at your case I think Seamus is right I would try to find an aio that would work.
that case has very bad air flow, liquid would be better.
If you don't need the disk drives I would look at something like a phanteks p400mesh.

I don´t have those components myself but going of people who have them who posted stuff online that´s very hot even for that cooler. So I am guessing the case has bad airflow as well.
So you MIGHT need to look at watercooling or consider changing the case if a stronger cooler doesn´t solve your issue.

Have a similar issue myself albeit in a fractal case, between a 2080ti and a 3700x using a noctua u12s the temps build over time to just shy of the cpu downclocking itself. I tried other coolers , more fans etc, nothing worked.
Until I took a chunk of the plastic out of the front panel , it was solid plastic with just small vent slits. So I took a large section of the front panel out , mounted a couple of 140 mm fans in the front and covered them with mesh dust filters. temps for both gpu and cpu dropped enough to be significant I.E no downclocking.

Anyway my longwinded point is you should be prepared a new (air) cooler may not solve the issue. (AIO might, I never used liquid myself)

*edit* easy way to test is to remove the front panel try running the game see if temps are better. If not test with side panel removed as well.
Also do you have a fan mounted in the front ? that case only comes with a fan in the back .

And retailer on my end recommends cpu cooler of no taller than 155mm even though manufacturer says 160.

I haven´t built in that specific case but that´s how I would do it .

so air goes in a sort of line from the front intake through the (vertical) cpu cooler idealy into a exhaust fan behind the cpu cooler.
That´s a nice looking case btw, I might get me one of those for a build.

I actually had to google that thing as I initially thought you meant the old full tower haf x case.
https://www.coolermaster.com/catalog/legacy-products/cases/haf-x/
I'd legitimately forgotten the haf xb exists and thought you'd just made a typo.

Dunno about the original haf xb, but there's a version called the haf xb evo that you can find on amazon and a couple other places.

Though... I have absolutely no idea what the difference between the two is. And I don't honestly care enough to go over the spec sheets for both line by line. heh

Are you playing with an uncapped framerate? cap it for now if now to lower CPU usage.

But either way the 212 evo is not suitable for that chip, the 212's tdp rating is barely enough at base frequency, you need 230+W tdp cooling for the boost frequency.

Lol, I didn't even think of that.

It's a pretty ghetto solution (since you're leaving "extra" performance on the table) but it does work nonetheless. Did it myself many moons ago when I was having CPU temp issues in Battlefield 1.

I have Scythe Mugen 5 rev B, it's around 155mm height. Both on my old Intel and now AMD, I never had more than 65C! And it cost like 60$ And is really quiet!!!
I was thinking about BeQuiet Dark Rock, but was more expensive...
