But, sometimes, it's just as easy to run from spot to spot or use the fires to fast travel.
That said they are good fun and sometimes do help out in a battle. Sometimes its just having another target for the enemy to focus on that gives you a breather; the damage they do helps too, but the greater part is they take some of the attention off you. A big help in fights against lots of opponents or where your battle bleeds into other areas or a convoy walks into your battleground.
You don't "need" them but that's part of the games somewhat open combat options. You can snipe, sneak and trap, engage in spear combat, dance around with a bow, leap off your mount back to charge etc.... Really the choice is what you want to make it in combat.
I also find that exploring the world with a mount helps and even travelling; you'll get into more random fights, see more of the map and such and sometimes its just more immersive/engaging than always using quick-travel points.
Overriding machines is slightly separate since you can't control them (ride) so they tend to work only in one area. They can be, again, a big help in a fight. Overrriding machines gives you allies. In the expansion right at the end you have to go fight some of the new bear machines which are very tough; capturing a nearby robot or two to help you out is a big aid; it gives that fast moving fire slinging claw slahsing bear something else to focus on; that gives you breathing room.
And if you happen to take over the biggest machine in the area, then yep that's going to smash up a lot for you. In higher difficulties this can be a big help in harvesting materials since it means you don't have to use as much of your inventory to take stuff out.
Fortunately there is no stamina for running, and there is fast travel.
The controls are iffy for the mounts, You have to alter their speed manually. They are awkward and pretty much optional.
Probably not a bad idea for me to think more about overriding them before combat though, as it just normally doesn't occur to me.
Good stuff here, thanks for taking the time...love this kind of comprehensive explanation.
Hell yes, a Sawtooth mount would be amazing...even if they didn't fight for you. Would look so badass, riding one of them beasts.
