I've did the same on my PS4 version but still had to do a lot of tries to get it on gold. oO
That's not like riding a bicycle. ^^
That being said, I was never hugely frustrated by them. I ended up treating them like Soulsborne boss fights: whenever I had trouble with a trial, I took a break for a while, came back and usually beat it with another try or two. Or three.
But yes, the Frozen Wilds Hunter Trials are definitely the hardest part of the game.
My break was about half a year until I continued playing and finally finishing the PS4 version (did the DLC before finalizing the main game). XD
I maxed all hunting trials in Vanilla, and the most pain in the ass, were those time limits in some of them!!! As with all my toys they were not hard by themselves...
Another good vid that showcases all trials as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDyaZINzzU8&t=106s
As is the Onslaught Trial on gold.
I used a combination of precision arrows against the regular machines shooting off their precious parts, and the ice rattler in combination with sticky bombs against the Ravager at the end.
For the Chieftain trial I cheated and lowered the difficulty to Story because ♥♥♥♥ it.
I am on NG+ ultra hard, so I cannot change the difficulty. ^^
Furthermore, I recommend to use Sticky Bombs as they do more damage than Blast Bombs. ;)
Ah well... On Story I think it doesn't matter.
But on ultahard Sticky Bombs do 105 base damage and Blast Bombs just 70.
And I've to say, the Chieftain Trial was ridiculously easy compared to the Onslaught.
You have a lot more time and when using the tree log traps you deal massive damage (killing the two Scorchers upon start with ease).
Irkie's Challenge was interesting, but as the final enemy can be killed with the 2 log traps, it's either pretty easy when all arrows are used properly. :)
This is my third run for the unique weapon and armor mods. Soon only these will be applied to my gear. XD
Even though some of them are pretty useless compared to other mods that are a bit better regarding the speciality they raise.
Even if one of them survives, there are not much HP left on it.
Therefore the Chieftain Trial was weirdly the easiest for me.
Control is the middle one and
Onslaught was the most difficult one, especially of having to face a Ravager at the end when there is not much time left.
I finished Onslaught with 3:29 of 3:30. XD
You get all the unique items (Frozen Wilds modifications behind Gold on Ikrie's Challenge and Hunting Trial, Adept Lodge Weapons behind Gold on all base game Hunting Trials), even on lower difficult.
It's just benefical to play NG+ ultrahard if you want to unlock all face paints and focus colors.
