I used to crash at almost every cutscene once my VRAM usage is around 7.5GB+ on 1.00. On patch 1.01 I crashed every 1-2 hours but not as often as on 1.00. Currently have no crashes on patch 1.02 and VRAM usage seems to be slightly lower than before (still reaches around 7.8GB though). I'm using Original settings with only Textures set to Ultra running at 3440x1440 fullscreen mode (getting around 45-70 fps 8700k + 1080 with driver ver 451.85).
Messaggio originale di Mofoni:
i got a ASUS Strix GTX 1080ag, but i get complete System freezes (deadlocks) instead of crashes, forcin me to shut down my PC by holding down the powerbutton. The crashes are completely random and cant be anticipated by any hints beforehand. I already updated Windows and my NVIDIA drivers to the most up to date version and tweaked the compability settings as mentioned here:

Maybe this will help you.
1. If you have NVIDIA GPU update your drivers to 452.06 (do clean install)
2. If u don't have windows 10 2004 update it and check new option called "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" in Graphics settings
3. Close unnecessary programs (for example don't use web browser when u are playing)
4. Disable steam overlay
5. Find your game file and right click on HorizonZeroDawn.exe -> Properties -> Compatibility and check
- Disable fullscreen optimizations
- Run this program as an administrator
Then go to "Change high DPI settings" and check "Override high DPI scaling behavior"

I also disabled several non-relevant services in msconfig and changed the Overclocking settings in my BIOS (more like disabled anything and reset all settings there)

I have completed the game except for the frozen wilds expansion as of now and had to force-shutdown my PC an estimated 20 times, which is quite annoying.

If it wouldnt be for this problem (and the missing snow-physics:steamfacepalm:), this game would be great.

Anyone else having similar problems?

Did you disable TDR for this game or did that for other reason before? Using registry editor to set tdrlevel to 0 or using app to do that?
Gtx 1080 Asus strix. No crashes after last patch. Windows 2004, clean installation of drivers using DDU. 45-80 fps 1440p, it very much depends on the area, but most of the time I have 55-60 fps. Even on 4k around 45 fps.

I'm expecting performance patches, hope I can get stable 60.

just checked in the registry under

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers

and found "TdrDelay" set on decimal 100, but no "tdrlevel".

So, i created a new entry.

with the name TdrLevel and a decimal value of 3, as mentioned on a Microsoft documentation [docs.microsoft.com]

do you have this entry?
Somewhat on the topic.. I have a gtx 1080 and a ryzen 3800x. Will I be able to run the game at constant 60fps at 1080p? Its definetly a dealbreaker for me if I cant

You should be able to, yes. I never dip under 70ish fps, with a 2070 Super Max-P (laptop 2070 super) which is between a 1080 and 1080 TI in terms of performance.

I have a GTX 1080 and finished the game with zero crashes.
Ryzen 7 3700x.

If you don't have TdrLevel, I think it is the same as TdrLevel = 3 so that was okay.

Your TdrDelay = 100 is much higher than the default which is just 2. I think 2 means 2 seconds. So 100 means 100 seconds.

When your PC freeze during game, have you waited more than 100 seconds before you shutdown?

I got confirmations from 2x 2080 users that they dip below 45 fps in ruins, big cities, etc.

Edit: fyi a 1070 fixed crashes by capping fps. could be something in that https://steamcommunity.com/app/1151640/discussions/0/2795001034228844214/

GTX1080sc crashing all the time. Not even fun until fixed.
Whaaat the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. 2x GTX 1080ti. Was running fine until today, game won't even start. Crashes everytime it hits the sony entertainment screen.

I've updated all nvidia drivers... this is stupid
Well I have a i9-10900, 32 GB RAM, 1080 Turbo and used the recommendations at the start of this thread after 1 crash today. Just got another one. Very frustrating.
Every crash so far since the start of this game, has created the following warning in Event Viewer:

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
