Gloomwood

So... About Hive Elevator Sequence.
First of all, I loved this callback to the original demo of Gloomwood. But here it is much different gamepaly wise. In the demo there was a lot of places to hide and you had to constantly move to avoid detection. In Hive the head-on confrontation seems inevitable no matter what you do. There are only 2 or 3 places where you can hide and bide time but crowmen eventually WILL find you at some point. Seems scripted but I would love to be proven wrong.

Gloomwood protag is an ambush predator and he thrives when he fights on his conditions and immediately kicks the bucket when he does not. In other places, when you end up in an unfavorable position against enemies you are not prepared to deal with, it is 100% player's fault. In this case that unfavorable position is forced onto the player. I get the appeal of that. Pushing the player to their limit and drain them of resources they've been (probably) hoarding. It's not supposed to be easy. But the ammount of things I did just to BARELY survive makes me feel like I missed the obvious solution and bruteforced it instead.

Basically spent my whole inventory. which constisted of 3 flashbombs, 3 smoke bombs, 10 shells of shotgun ammo 2 firebolts and filled the area to the brim with unlimited explosive oil barrels, so generously provided by our benefactors. And even then - one wrong move and I'm toast.

Comment below how you've dealt with the crowmen horde.

I think I just hid under the platform in the farthest corner too. And then I just walked away to the elevator without a scratch.

On the first tower after getting the harpoon gun, there’s 3 stackable traps, so make sure to grab that. Plus, next to the refuel station, there’s two metal crates. You can kill two crow men for free before starting the elevator sequence by dropping it on the head of the regular and tanky crowman on the way to bringing the gasoline back. They specifically stand under ledges for you to do this.

Forgot to mention that if you can isolate one crowman or guard a door with a trap, it’s fairly easy to win 1v1’s with them, lowering the amount of crowmen overall. All you need to do to dodge their attacks is jump backwards, and they’ll easily miss.

Charge stab + jump backwards, repeat.

I do think that part needs work as well, more hiding spots that aren't crowman proof (like the aforementioned ramp) and envirovement to use against the horde in general. The lift takes way too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ long for the amount of stuff there is to do around it while waiting. It's either Doomslayer time or hide and wait, not much in between, because all the architecture for fun stealth is away from it. You want the stealth to be active, especially during a setpiece like this.

They should rework it to make it more like the demo imo

I placed 2 oil barrels in the doors and 3 bear traps next to the elevator, so I had time to react to the charging crowmen. To conserve ammo, I only shoot each crowmen 1 time with the revolver and 1 time with the shotgun (playing in full moon).

I found it relatively easy... after preparing the defenses. The first time I didn't knew that the sound of the elevator would attract so many enemies, so I was quickly overwhelmed and killed.

When I finally Completed the elevator section, it was an Intense stealth sequence. I hid behind the ramp, but when A baby got too close, I had to abandon it and go hide by the cliffs. They were passing me left and right, and I wasn’t fully hidden, so I felt like I barely scraped by.

I agree there should be more incentive to go back into the ruins for that section! To be honest, I think that the ramp hiding place should even be removed So that if anyone wants to disappear, they have to go to the ruins. Maybe another route that the crows can see you from, but can’t quickly get to? Another harpoon spot?

Is the harpoon gun strictly required for the area after the elevator? I had left it behind at the save point before going down into the ruins and got stuck after completing the elevator sequence cause there was no obvious way to climb up in the fountain area.

Standard crowmen go down with a 1 shotgun + 1 revolver shot combo. The stronger ones need 3-4 SG shots, but can also be taken down with an incendiary flare if you want to save ammo - it just takes a bit for them to burn down. I was able to clear the whole hive and still have ammo to spare.
I just jumped on the generator and hugged the wall behind it for dear life.

They never saw me. lmao

I haven't been able to properly finish this sequence in my last playthrough due to a glitch with the oil barrels, but I did notice that you can darken a corner in the large pool of water nearby, so presumably I'll try to hide there when it's fixed.

Yeah, the elevator sequence is probably the low point of the whole Hive. I know the game is expecting you to hold out while the elevator arrives, but straight combat with the crowmen is really awful.

I was even more bummed when I found out that the game scripting automatically shuts the gate to the escape route that leads out of the main hive. I got really frustrated so I grabbed the metal boxes from the Fuel Room, walked them allll the way over there, and used both boxes to keep the door open when it attempted to shut. It worked, and I got to sit out the whole sequence in complete safety behind a locked door LOL
