How to equip weapons

Just started and love the vibe of the game. Maybe I'm just stupid and missing something obvious but how on earth do you equip weapons other than the canesword? I have a shotgun and 4 shells in my inventory but I can't figure out any way to assign them to hotkey or equip it. Thanks in advance.

Similar problem less far into game I think. Found axe and knife, can't figure out how to equip. If they aren't weapons that's a bit bizarre. IF they are, give me a clue. In the bin with this one I think.

Was looking forward to this game, but half the interactable items that light up seem to have zero purpose in the tutorial/starting area. Please don't put something in a starter area if you don't want the player to waste time trying to figure out how to use it.

You can throw them at enemies! They're mighty good weapons if you need to take out an enemy head-on. Start with a surprise axe throw and cane 'em down!

The weapons that are usable auto equip when you have them in your inventory. 1 for cane sword, 2 for pistol, 3 for shotgun, 4 for flare pistol c to change ammo types, 5 for flash bombs. H to holster any weapon to run faster. Hold the reload button r to check how much ammo is in your pistol/ shotgun while holding them.
