I should play Thief before this right?
I was stealth game averse growing up, so I skipped it.

While Gloomwood was heavily inspired by Thief series. I wouldn't say you NEED to play it, but definetly recommended.
The core gameplay of the two games are really close. If you enjoy Thief, you'll like this game as well and vice versa.

A bit of warning: the first 3 Thief games needs some fixxing if you want it to run well on modern OS. It's really simple you just need to download some patches and done. You can find a lot of videos to help you.
But the fourth Thief/Thief remake can be played without any problem. But the gameplay of Thief 4 is really different compared to the other games.

You could also start with this game then go play Thief. It's up to you.

Another stealth game I recommend is Dishonored.
You should play Thief regardless, it's pretty good.

I would recommend, but I would say to play Thief 2, not Thief 1 if you're looking for pure stealth. Thief 1 has a lot of monsters that can't exactly be stealth passed and you either have to kill them or bunny hop pass them. Mostly bunny hop pass them because the combat is extremely clunky.
(Also, Thief 4 doesn't exist)

yes, the first 3 thief games are pretty fun and it gets even better when you get to the fan missions( thief 2x, the black parade, etc)

I would say its not too big of a deal what you play first since there is a good chance you'll end up playing both.

I played Gloomwood first and then went into the thief games, my experience of gloomwood wouldn't be that different if it was vice versa imo

I think there's no connection between these games so you don't have to play any of the Thief games before this.
However I can only recommend you play those games.

You don't have to, but, it's a fkn awesome game, so, you should play it really.

Not the 2014 one though. Thief Gold, Thief 2 The Metal Age, and Thief 3 Deadly Shadows are the ones.

Wouldn't say it gets better, because I still rate the original games and missions higher than anything fan mission really, but, there are some really god FMs as well. Black Parade, and, especially The Scarlet Cascabel. That one is crazy good.

Thief Deadly Shadows, To this day, for me it is the most atmospheric and scariest stealth game ever.

I would say that gloomwood is spiritually inspired by thief they aren't super similar.
Thief 2 is really good though

Steam isn't letting me quote people in a reply, but what De_faulty said is inaccurate and bad advice in my opinion. You absolutely can sneak past all the "monster" enemies, you just have to learn their alert states. This is actually a common misconception a lot of people have.

I also think it's pretty lame to tell people to skip the first game when it's important to the story and world, not to mention that saying this is kind of a spoiler, as the supernatural enemies were a welcome twist when I first played the game. And who knows, you may even come to prefer the richness of the world in Thief 1 over Thief 2 like myself

yea Ive heard many good things about those 2 but I decided to work my way from the start when it comes to FM's and try out the notable ones to better appreciate the more complex ones when I get there.

So far I've tried GaTB, Lord Edumund Entertains,Bloodstone Prison, Autumn in Lampfire Hills, Calendras Cistern, and Equilibrium to name a couple. Next on the list is 7th Crystal, Calendras Legacy and Ominous Bequest which Im looking forward to since I heard that its around this point that fm's start considerably going up in terms of quality and complexity.
