So, it's pretty late now, but why didn't you use the quicksaves? You're not supposed to, but you can quicksave on Bloodmoon difficulty.
If you just want rid of the wax cylinders, limit yourself to quicksaving when at a phonograph, and since you're not picking the cylinders up or you don't have any anymore, you can even use the phonograph and have a spin at it when you quicksave to convince yourself that you're using it to save.
This way you have the difficulty (low health, heavy enemy damage, low ressources and numerous enemy placements) while still being able to save.
But I hope when the devs add custom difficulty everyone will be pleased.
