Equipment speculation based on the trailer
So, in the new trailer we saw that the player has five equipment slots: melee, ring, offhand, eye, and head.

Melee is pretty self-explanatory, being the natural home of the canesword.

Ring is for the light-gem ring.

Offhand is shown to contain the lantern.

Eye presumably would encompass things like the monocle found in the demo.
And we have yet to see any items that would fit the "head" slot.

The interesting thing is that the player seems to be able to swap between different items in each slot, so the canesword might not be the only melee weapon, the light ring might not be the only ring, etc.

So, what are some theories as to what these other equipped items (or other gameplay implications) might be?

The ability to swap out different weapons could mean an upgraded version of the canesword, or possibly a sequence where your weapon is lost somehow and you have to use a worse/improvised weapon before you can reclaim it.

Being able to swap out rings seems weird to me, since the light gem feels mechanically important enough to be more of like a diegetic HUD element than something that can just be swapped out willy-nilly. The fact that the wring is visible to you when worn lends itself to things like a gem that glows brighter as you get near certain things though.

For offhand: possibly alternate lanterns like a bulls-eye lantern that lets off long-range directional light or a magical lantern that reveals hidden and invisible things. Aside from lanterns, I've no ideas. Maybe some kind of magical device.

In the Demo there's a monocle you can use to zoom your view in like a spyglass. Other items for this slot could be magical monocles that lose the zoom function for letting you see in the dark or see hidden markings and invisble enemies.

The head slot could contain a gas mask/breathing device to get through flooded sections or ones filled with poison gas. And I'm sure a plague doctor mask is going to show up sooner or later. Possibly some kind of magical mask as well, given the fantastical elements.

Any other ideas of what gameplay possibilities this opens?

You can see an alternative melee weapon in one of the screenshots on the store page.

Without spoiling anything, some of these are some pretty good guesses lol

Which one are you talking about? All the melee weapons in the screenshots are just the canesword. If you're talking about the one that's being held kinda horizontally, that's just how the canesword is held when you're crouching. It was shown off in a video on Dillon's youtube a while ago, and you can see it in last year's trailer.

I really hope you can use the axe the enemies use.
WIth that and the door breaking mechanic you could pull a perfect "here's Jonny!"
