You will not be able to find any reliable information about the years in which the plot takes place, but some believe that Mari died in October 1995-1996. At that time, Sunny was 12 years old.
Your game starts in 4 years, that is, in 1999, when Sunny turns 16. All the other friends are also about 16 years old, only Kel is almost 17 years old. Hero and Mari are probably 18-19 years old.
