If we look at he demo, right off the bat there is a Host and Join option in the menu screen.

So yes, we seem to host our own games.
I'd imagine it is very important to maintain and preserve the progression in a given run. If it wasn't, why even bother doing all the gear fetching and boss killing when a friend can join and make that moot? I can't see combining saves since that's is exploitative and glitchy as heck. How would you manage your Towers, if at all? Have Two Towers? That'd could be weird and a bit awkward. Nor can I see importing existing characters in other runs into someone else's save, like in Terreria, since you could easily bring progress skipping resources into the world, assuming the inventory also followed. I see that a lot in No Man's Sky as well, able to just dump a progression breaking amount of goods on someone, but that game already offers many ways to break progression, or just skip all that and play in Creative mode. In any case, it would be terrible to have progress ruined because someone joined with an out of sync save file, so progression in other saves are very likely never mixed.

So it might be like how Stardew Valley is done, where you make a character for that hosted game and have your own stuff only inside that hosted game, but I can't say for sure. I don't know how a guest's inventory would be managed there. Do they drop their stuff? Keep it? Becomes inaccessible while not logged in? I do hope whatever the devs pick, it is made clear as to what happens.
Wish I can offer something more definite, but there is just stuff that isn't directly said. Just have to wait one more day before the game releases to know for sure.
You can host and join games is pretty much the takeaway, how it works is something else entirely.
Edit: Admittedly we should get some info soon, since the game released sooner than expected. I swear last time I looked it was releasing tomorrow.
kinddaaa ehh cuz means i just have to only play this game with the host
Having played it, I know it would just break things if you could import a character in from another game with a mess of advanced resources.
But who knows, the devs might update this later.
