Tab? Wait that's the Gun selection.
Q? Consumables
E is already used for pickup.
Shift would feel really odd.
Ctrl would feel just as odd.
R is reload.
F is for respect in chat for Scanning.
Z, X, or C? That'd be weird.
About the only thing I can see changing is Tab, given I'm used to a few other games to open inventory, but I've also gotten into the habit of using Tab for gun cycling, albeit awkwardly.
I can see the argument for why it might be bad to have the old school "I" is for Inventory, but it was likely picked because of its legacy association. If I'm looking for the inventory, Tab and I would be my go to first guesses. But maybe that's because I'm 'old'.
I really don't see this as being that big of a deal. The devs worked with what was established pretty well in this regard, but could have done better in other aspects.
Also, do you want regular inventory management while in the middle of a run?! That's a good way to bog things down. I think having the inventory button being away from the hot areas on the keyboard is a good idea. That near WASD real estate is best served with what's already there.
If I'm going to be sorting out loot mid run, I'd have to stop and look at a mess of icons anyway, so 'awkwardly' moving my hand to press I is by fair the least of my worries.
