indeed, mechamusume was the toy/figure franchise that started it all, then came frame arms girl and other such, and at certain point someone thought to apply the concept to mobile games and got heavy $$ on that
that being said, this is clearly heavily inspired by kancolle and other mobile franchises that rip off it. except unlike most other clones it succeeded
similarly it's not far fetched to say that banG Dream rips off lovelive, and love live rips off idol master. to say that they don't because girls bands and idols are a thing irl is ridiculous.
