Crop plot water consumption piped vs. unpiped
I just added water piping to my farming setup and have noticed that the piped water consumption of iron crop plots is absolutely insane. 10 of them go through 100 litres of water in just a couple of game hours. This is a stark contrast to unpiped, watering them with a watering can, where they only seem to need watering about once per game day... the water consumption is way lower.

Is this expected? Is this a bug?

The "valves" make watering LARGE area crop plots easier :)
I imagine they didn't want crop irrigation to be automatic...good balancing.

Crop irrigation still requires care.
You just can't leave the water on...
It would be a waste of stored water.

Can plants drown?

Internet quote:

Yes, plants can drown when the soil is too wet and saturated with water, which prevents the plant's roots from getting enough oxygen to function properly. This is called overwatering.

Maybe they should put this^ into the game :)

This is not a mistake

they do use a lot of water, especially if you connect 10 of them.

I don't see anything at that URL that explains the apparent increase in thirst from being watered using a Liquid Container (such as a watering can) to being connected to a water network. Am I missing something?
In this case, I can only say one thing: this is the game balance.

Ah! This makes perfect sense, and it's an excellent way to look at the game mechanics.

I haven't seen a valve device in the game. Are you just referring to the on/off function of some devices, or is there a thing I can use to interrupt water to a branch of the pipe network?

No.
I just pretend the on/off switch is a valve...
Maybe we should ask for "clappers"... ^^
