If you're tech savvy I'd suggest doing a little digging to see if you actually need that anti-virus program you have slowing your PC down. Keep in mind anti-virus software only catches the common stuff programmed into it that's known about - there's no way Steam or the Icarus guys would shoot themselves in the foot by sending out something that has known/identifiable malware in it. They're running all the same checks your anti-virus software is - in fact they probably have the same or similar anti-virus except the enterprise versions.
