If you really want to crank those numbers up, get the B.E.A.S.T. Scanner from the workshop. Using it to scan an animal gives you six points, and you don't even need to kill them as you run by.
Is it possible that kills made by other players silently increase my progress too? From time to time I was looking at that number that pops up in the corner and counting the diff just to get rough estimate how more I need. I could swear that I was getting ~15 or so. But now I'm playing solo and was puzzled by the low increase.
