Report a translation problem
The lore states that the air is laced with toxins from the failed terraforming. One of the envirosuits we wear is stated to not be airtight in the flavor text in the game.
The other part of this is that I think I a lot of people miss is that Icarus was supposed to be an "everyone pack up and go home we screwed up" situation until exotics were found.
Everything floating in space was just about retrofitted to deploy pods for prospectors to jump down to. Topping that off with the fact that it's a star system about 4 light-years away from ours, and is stated that travel to the system takes about 2 years.
It's a matter of logistics and money at this point, and with everyone having sent most of the equipment back home, it's no wonder most of our stuff is low quality and we're having to build from scratch.
