Any of the other elements though, will boost the spell storage and damage of the chosen element; but reduce those of the other elements. Which is great if you only ever use that one element- but, it makes it more difficult to self heal, requiring you to double empower heals for the really big heals- which can be dangerous; and harder to be adaptive by using other spell types at even a single empowerment without stacking a lot of piety..
With that said, if you don't want poison, I'd recommend ice, personally- The condensed and double empowered ice spell is a giant ice meteor that hits like a freight train, and paired with the dragon boost you can spam it 3-4 times in quick succession to basically gib any boss that isn't resistant to ice type magic; And the homing style magic is pretty strong too.
Edit: with the above said, Which element do you like to cast the most? If you -really- like lightning and the way it handles, and find yourself casting lightning spells constantly, then the lightning element is probably the best one for you; Likewise if you find yourself mostly using fire, or wind.
Id like to add that the difference from heal lvl 2 to lvl 3 is approx 10% more so in most cases its best to empower heal to lvl 2. Which makes the default poison contract that much worse compared to any other element.
Similarly, Poison is the only element that doesn't reduce the cast storage and damage of the other elements- So it's great for all rounding; While each individual element has weaknesses and reduces the damage/effect and cast storage of all other elements; healing included.
Ice is great too; It's been my go to for when i'm not worried about survival, but, poison takes the cake for me on difficult fights and progression so far.
All comes down to preference though. :)
The boost in damage is SO terrible that you might as well stick with poison, since it not only makes your heal better - it lets you store heal longer to pump it up.
Aligning to an elemet reduces all your store times, so unless you have tons of PIE - I don't recommend it. ( at east not until you get actual gear and into the 40's level zone + _
as for wind magic being the best, I don't agree - you can hit through walls with EVERY magic lol. especially fire - which can blast through a horizontal line of foes when pmped up - and ches through walls.
the problem with aligning to a single magic type, is enemies have weaknessess - a water enemy is weaker to lightning, a lightnign for is weak to wind, etc.
But Witch can use 4 of the 5 elements to attack with. Fire, Ice, Wind and Thunder contracts will buff those spells and lower the damage output of the rest so if you were a Thunder witch fighting a foe resistant to thunder you can still attack using the other 3 elements just with a 10% lower output.
Going on to what's objectively the best, it's actually the Wind Contract, because Wind spells have the most convenient hitboxes, phase through platforms and walls, and at Level 3, have both extreme horizontal AND vertical reach. Level 3 Condensed Wind is perhaps the best spell in the game, and being able to cast it in almost half the inputs is no joke, on top of having more Wind spell casts before your Dragon Surge runs out. At all stages of the game, the Wind contract is undeniably the most versatile.
Seriously though, been playing solo Witch and I can safely say that, even before I went Wind Contract, wind spells were my most used, with Fire coming in second because it's good for clearing lines of enemies. Still, Witch solo is "git gud time", been learning through pain
EDIT: The one thing I still struggle a bit though is the Dragon Surge. The timing of activating it, casting the chosen spell with an enhancement and finding the opening to spam it all at once is still a bit harsh for me. Death by greed is real.
