Imo, Poison. You start with it, It makes self healing a lot easier and more responsive by making it skip from power 1 to power 3 with one empowerment cast; which dramatically boosts survivability- And it has no detriment on the spell storage or damage of any of the other elements.

Any of the other elements though, will boost the spell storage and damage of the chosen element; but reduce those of the other elements. Which is great if you only ever use that one element- but, it makes it more difficult to self heal, requiring you to double empower heals for the really big heals- which can be dangerous; and harder to be adaptive by using other spell types at even a single empowerment without stacking a lot of piety..

With that said, if you don't want poison, I'd recommend ice, personally- The condensed and double empowered ice spell is a giant ice meteor that hits like a freight train, and paired with the dragon boost you can spam it 3-4 times in quick succession to basically gib any boss that isn't resistant to ice type magic; And the homing style magic is pretty strong too.

Edit: with the above said, Which element do you like to cast the most? If you -really- like lightning and the way it handles, and find yourself casting lightning spells constantly, then the lightning element is probably the best one for you; Likewise if you find yourself mostly using fire, or wind.

thanks for the information. i think ill keep poison then for a more balanced gameplay

Personally I like wind a lot because of the vast superiority for AoEs and homing magic, a lot of it easily going through walls. Where as ice gets gibbed from walls and platforms easily.

I remember people saying Wind was the best and honestly I think I can agree to that after playing the switch version for many many hours, Wind tends to go through walls and ceilings killing everything from any angle, it's also very easy to cast for me, because X X X X feels comfy on controller.

Ice is the best, condensed ice lvl 3 does huge damage to bosses, and ice inflicts agi down which is the best debuff to inflict. the pet is not the greatest for quick attacks but does fairly well against single targets once it hits.

Id like to add that the difference from heal lvl 2 to lvl 3 is approx 10% more so in most cases its best to empower heal to lvl 2. Which makes the default poison contract that much worse compared to any other element.

I don't take poison for that extra 10% healing (Although every bit counts in a hard fight on a frail character like the witch); I take it for the lengthened healing cast storage. It makes it much easier to go into 'survive' mode, focusing on dodging everything and slipping in upgrades to the heal as you can without dropping the spell from not casting it for too long. With any of the other elements, the shortened heal cast time and reduced effectiveness can be pretty harsh unless you dump a lot of points and gear into building piety to counter it; which itself cuts into your damage potential anyway.

Similarly, Poison is the only element that doesn't reduce the cast storage and damage of the other elements- So it's great for all rounding; While each individual element has weaknesses and reduces the damage/effect and cast storage of all other elements; healing included.

Ice is great too; It's been my go to for when i'm not worried about survival, but, poison takes the cake for me on difficult fights and progression so far.

All comes down to preference though. :)

Take poison until you have a handle on your spells, and don't other aligning with a particular element unless you plan to use tomes of that type, and are handy with the magic.
The boost in damage is SO terrible that you might as well stick with poison, since it not only makes your heal better - it lets you store heal longer to pump it up.
Aligning to an elemet reduces all your store times, so unless you have tons of PIE - I don't recommend it. ( at east not until you get actual gear and into the 40's level zone + _

as for wind magic being the best, I don't agree - you can hit through walls with EVERY magic lol. especially fire - which can blast through a horizontal line of foes when pmped up - and ches through walls.

the problem with aligning to a single magic type, is enemies have weaknessess - a water enemy is weaker to lightning, a lightnign for is weak to wind, etc.

But Witch can use 4 of the 5 elements to attack with. Fire, Ice, Wind and Thunder contracts will buff those spells and lower the damage output of the rest so if you were a Thunder witch fighting a foe resistant to thunder you can still attack using the other 3 elements just with a 10% lower output.

Longtime Witch main here, with 550 hours on the Switch and over 80 hours on the new patch (PC/Switch combined). Poison is quite literally the worst possible contract for the Witch, and you should switch away from it as soon as possible. The reason for this is that the benefits for the Poison contract are abysmal - going from Level 2 heals to Level 3 is extremely weak compared to the jump from Level 1 to Level 2, and being able to heal more during Dragon Surge is pathetic compared to being able to cast more Tornadoes/Forked Lightning/Meteors. At the endgame, my Level 2 Condensed Heal restores 110 HP/tick compared to the 45 HP/tick of my Level 1 Condensed Heal, but my Level 3 Condensed Heal only restores 120 HP/tick. Simply put, it's not worth the number of inputs used to upgrade the spell, and the Poison contract having automatic Level 3 heals (as opposed to Level 2) is horrible compared to the benefits of an actually offense-oriented contract. That being said, Ice is also the second worst contract, mostly because Ice spells have the worst hitboxes and are generally inhibited by platforms and walls. You want a contract that allows you to spam a powerful Level 3 spell, and Ice isn't the best choice in that aspect.

Going on to what's objectively the best, it's actually the Wind Contract, because Wind spells have the most convenient hitboxes, phase through platforms and walls, and at Level 3, have both extreme horizontal AND vertical reach. Level 3 Condensed Wind is perhaps the best spell in the game, and being able to cast it in almost half the inputs is no joke, on top of having more Wind spell casts before your Dragon Surge runs out. At all stages of the game, the Wind contract is undeniably the most versatile.

@Zachie plus, your clothes become extra minty with that green sheen :winter2019joyfultearsdog:

Seriously though, been playing solo Witch and I can safely say that, even before I went Wind Contract, wind spells were my most used, with Fire coming in second because it's good for clearing lines of enemies. Still, Witch solo is "git gud time", been learning through pain :winter2019saddog:

EDIT: The one thing I still struggle a bit though is the Dragon Surge. The timing of activating it, casting the chosen spell with an enhancement and finding the opening to spam it all at once is still a bit harsh for me. Death by greed is real.

Используйте заклинание улучшения дважды. Это можно сделать только с книгой, а не с фокусом. Вам нужно использовать его только один раз для заклинаний с тем же элементом, что и ваш контракт.
Lord Mephiles Aug 19, 2020 @ 12:02am

Lord Mephiles Aug 19, 2020 @ 2:00am
