Similar Games like this masterpiece?
Hey all,

i know there are some topics already about this, but i am searching for a similar game like this gem. I never played a game this addictive and well written in this genre. And now i am trying to fill the void, this game left in my heart.

I am especially searching for a game/more games with a complex story telling, choices, romance and character development. NOT a ,,princess builder'' or just a ,,growing up'' simulator. The games ,,Growing Up'' and ,,Wildermyth'' are pretty good but just... not enough after this game.

I would be so thankfull for a hint! xoxo

(Sorry for any typos, i am not fluent in english!)

Not many games can compare in my experience. But I would recommend games like Our Life and its sequel that should be releasing next year if I remember correctly!!

Oh thank you! I will try that one, and yeah sadly yes, sadly i didnt found anything similar enough to catch me. The devs really outdid themself here

I agree, this game is fantastic and nothing comes close. Kind of what makes it great though! It's one of my top favorites for sure. I'm keeping an eye on this thread!

I really enjoyed the relationship, interwoven choices matter storytelling, the conversations and character growth, and the fact that you can change outcomes using skills other than combat or physical strength, such as persuasion, biology, etc. I haven't seen many games that encompass these core traits I enjoyed. I also love a sci fi or fantasy setting. None of these are super similar but share some traits...

The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood also really captivated me! You play as a fortune-telling witch who has been exiled from her coven into space. The choices you make from the start impact the final outcome/other characters' stories and there are many endings. You build your own oracle deck using elemental energy you harvest. I don't want to say more without spoiling, but it is more of a visual novel than IWATE and you remain in your meteor home for most of the gameplay.

Another story-rich adventure visual novel set in space is Opus: Echo of Starsong. I haven't played it yet (looking forward to it) but it looks visually gorgeous with a mysterious, emotional story at its core.

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is another visual novel in which you are also a fortune-telling character and it looks like your choices impact the outcomes and you communicate with another realm. I also haven't played it yet other than the demo, but I enjoyed what I did see. You make various choices that branch out into different storylines.

Oxenfree and the second Oxenfree may have similar mysterious sci-fi elements in a story-rich choices matter game. You play as a teenager visiting a mysterious island with a group of friends in the first game. Haven't played yet but I got very sucked into a gameplay stream of the second game and that made me buy the first one.

For similar space/settling and surviving on another planet, Haven might be an option. Romance and your relationship is a heavy part of the story from what I've seen as you play as 2 members of a couple who escaped from their home planet and found a habitable one to settle on. It's a very different gameplay style than IWATE. I don't own this one but have watched some gameplay videos of it and I'm thinking of getting it on sale sometime although it has combat, which I am not really into.

Red Thread might be one to keep an eye on? I'm not sure. It's Early Access and I haven't played but it looks to be relationship building and communication making choices to change stories.

I've also see Signs of the Sojourner recommended - you play cards to have conversations as you travel as a merchant. You can play the prologue for free, I believe. I thought it was a neat idea and I played it but it did nothing for me. The characters, choices, and conversations didn't grab me.

Hope you find something that captivates you!

I've also seen Griftlands recommended as it has similar card battle type mechanic in a sci-fi setting. Again, I played the demo for this one and it just didn't grab me.

Wow! A really really big thank you for this fantastic answere! I will look up the games you reccomend to me! And i am glad that some offer a demo to try. Its trange how captive IWATE was for me, and i hope we both find something that fullfills us with nearly a similar feeling!

You're welcome. Hope you manage to find something fun. Some other games I've seen compared but don't know about cause I haven't played them:
Coffee Talk
Tavern Talk
Scarlet Hollow
Citizen Sleeper
Disco Elysium

Beacon Pines is...sort of...similar in terms of the looping story and choices, but it's a lot less immersive. I enjoyed it and the characters and spooky story, but it definitely wasn't anywhere close to IWATE.

How was Wildermyth in comparison? I've looked at and considered it, but not totally sold yet. I'm mostly interested in the character stories, stat building, and choices matter aspects and also like the fantasy setting.

Thank you for your reccomends! I want to play Beacon Pines next, i got it in the last sale!

And Wildermyth is ,,OKAY'' with great writing/story telling in a good fantasy setting, but the characters are very much less deep and the character relationships are not so powerful. On my opinion every character you play is irrelevant because everyone can die right from the beginning and you gain new companions over the playthrough and play them, you dont have a ,,main character'' you play Its still a very good game with great RpG elements!

Ahh interesting and good to know, thanks!

Recommend citizen sleeper also, the sequel for it should be coming out in a bit.

That really looked good to me too, i just bought it and i will try it, but its lacking the ,,romance'' factor, but many people said, they are not missing it, because of the great storytelling. I am excited to try it! Thank you very much!

Thats a wide variety of games, but great in their own right.
Coffee talk is basically a collection of more or less connected short storys about dfferrent characters, that are locked behind a mixing mini game.
Disco Elysium is a p&p style dark, mystery detective rpg, with a focus more on finding answers with the skills your character has, and less about "optimizing" them
