That would be good to know as well! Do you have to play through as a full engineer or something?

You get it via an event during the repair robots job. You have to let Professor Hal die to trigger it though.

Unfortunatly that's only part of the puzzle. If you ever are able to recalibrate the shields let me know. Because even after probably to dozen playthroughs (I've been one of the lucky beta testers)I wasn't able to do it.

You also need to know Congruence's birthday. Somehow Tammy tells us about her birthday, but I don't remember what I did to trigger this event.

also need to know to what specifics you need to calibrate them too and I never found them.

I think thats from her 80 percent empathy event. its where Tammy throws her a birthday party and just decides whatever day you threw it is congruence's "birthday" since shes an AI and doesnt have one.if you want to be able to know how to calibrate the shields you have to get the engineering books from being elected to the council as second engineer by not overthrowing lum. then your new play through you should pick congruence as your childhood friend and ship manuals as your favorite bedtime story, you should be able to calibrate the shields after this

Okay, having just triggered the shield recalibration myself, I think I've got the pre-requisites figured out. It looks like you need...
  1. Congruence's override codes
  2. An understanding of how the ship works
  3. An understanding of how the wormhole works

How to get Congruence's override codes
  1. Let Hal die
  2. Get your Engineering up to 50 so you gain access to the Robotics lab.
  3. Keep working in Robotics until you trigger an event where you realise that the reason random colony systems keep glitching out is because Congruence is still mourning Hal and keeps isolating subroutines to block the pain out. Once she's fixed, you can unlock Congruence as a childhood friend option.
  4. If you pick her as your friend, she gives you her override codes.

How to get an understanding of how the ship works
  1. Focus on your mental attributes
  2. When the elections for Second [insert position here] come up in your 18th year, go for Second Engineer. The reward for this is the Second Engineer card which gives you access to the ship schematics.
  3. Next time you start a new game, you have the option for having a childhood memory of your Dad reading you the engineering manuals.

How to get an understanding of how the wormhole works
  1. Get the Transcendence ending.

You need all three of these to be able to recalibrate the shields. Without the access codes, you can't do it at all; if you don't have the knowledge of how the ship and the wormhole work, you won't be able to adjust the shields properly.

Incidentally, this is also how you can get to the Stratos Destroyed and Life on Earth endings.

Thank you so much for providing such a detailed guide! It's exactly what I've been looking for!

You're welcome! I'm also putting the longer version of this as a proper guide so it doesn't get lost in the forum posts.

you have to unlock the ability to go outside during glow by exploring the area at the end of the Ridge, then you go out during glow (any day year will do) and complete pretty much all of/a good majority of the explore events. IF you do that, you should be able to see a faceless standing at the end. You can interact w/ this event, eventually you will be given the choice to resist or not. if you dont resist this should give you transcendence ending
