(Spoilers) Need help with past life choice

I am in my second playthrough and just finished creating my character. I was given a past life choice to recalibrate the shields to help save hydroponic farms before the ship goes through the wormhole and crash on the planet. I click on it and was given another past life choice option but it was grayed out and I did not know the root access code. How do I get the root access code?

Consequently, I can enter the root code but then my stupid kid brain doesn't know what to do next xD Any ideas why that might be or how you get the engineering manuals option?

Yeah in order to pick her as a friend you have to let Hal die then follow the Repair Robotics questline until you can fix Congruence. Then you can pick her as a friend next time round and enter the root access code. BUT without these engineering manuals you STILL can't recalibrate the shields, and that's where I'm stuck :c

Do the repair robots questline. Get engineering up and in your mid teen years you can apply for the robotics lab. Do that job until you get the event to fix Congruence, choose the option to figure out what's wrong instead of straight up fixing her

As others have said, to get the root code you need to repair Congruence (I did it in my first run where Hal had died). You do that by progressing the Robot Repair job, not sure if age-gated, I did it at age 19.

To get the Engineering Manual/Book, you must have had a past life where you were voted in as Second Engineer (and finished the run? Not sure). After I completed a run where I had been Second Engineer, I had the option to pick the Engineering Manuals for the "Dad storytime" prompt in character creation.

I was only able to recalibrate the shields when I both picked the AI as my friend AND I had the Engi text as a chosen item.

Again, all I'm hearing is how much Hal needs to die. Also the fact that the guy working on a space ship with an AI partner is named Hal kind of fun.

Hmmm... I have reverse problem.
I can choose Eng.Manual and AI as a friend, but I don't get an option to try to repair Shields.

I think you might unlock the engineering manual by getting the roboticist ending someone else said you need to get voted as second engineer I also did this so this might be what you need to do

Ah. I have the manual but need to let Hal die and befriend congruence , then play another life. I was voted second engineer but my career at the end was roboticist, pretty sure thats where I got the manual from but not 100% sure.

So it does seem like letting Hal die and doing robotics eventually Congruence will ask you to help fix her and you can choose either option for the root code (one option needs organization 30)

my story is "engennering book" (was a bit hard to get, because you have to betray martz and let the bad guy open for the secondary position)
and my best friend is constance,

even with both, the game don't propose to change the shield things, how do you slip away from Hal vigilance ?

EDIT : I don't know why, but i load my first playthrougt and speed run the overseer arc and now i can fix the shield, i don't know how it's related, maybe because the overseer way explain more about her/his superpower

I'm not 100% sure but I think you get it if you don't make peace and don't have 100 bravery, organization, or animals.
