BTW, your link got marked as malicious and is dead now.
I'm not sure why the link is flagged as potentially malicious (I've googled for ways of rolling back updates and stumbled upon it) but I've removed it for now. Thanks for pointing this out!
But yeah, the issue definitely seems to be related to this latest version of Doom 64. I'm also on a 144Hz screen btw. though I'm not sure if this matters at all. Maybe Nightdive can distribute a fix... or maybe that's too much to hope for. :/
Yeah, ever since the update the game seems to have a weird jitter or stutter problem when moving the camera via the mouse. It's most noticeable when you are strafing side to side and moving the mouse to aim. If you are just walking straight forward, it's not really noticeable.
This seems to be an issue with the updated version (and is similar to the visual jitter on the Quake 2021 port). I have a backup old installation of Doom 64 pre-patch on another drive and it's buttery smooth. No jitter at all.
The game does technically run at the correct framerate, and tools like MSI Afterburner's FPS overlay will confirm that it does. But the visual jitter is there. Changing the renderer from Vulkan to OpenGL or DX11 doesn't change anything.
--------------------
Vulkan Renderer
2560x1440 @ 144Hz Fullscreen
Interpolation On
Vsync On
--------------------
Clean install of:
Windows 10 Pro 21H2
RTX 3070 Driver Version 512.15
No special drivers installed for mouse or keyboard
The settings I use for all their games are as follows (with an Nvidia GPU):
In Nvidia panel, go to Manage 3D settings and under the Program settings tab look for the game or add it to the list.
Under Vertical Sync use FastSync
Use Ultra Low Latency mode
Set Power Management mode to Prefer Maximum Performance
Set Max Frame Rate to 500
In-game I use the Vulkan renderer whenever possible/available and set Interpolation to On.
Powerslave Exhumed is their best effort so far in terms of stutter. I barely notice it at all.
The recent update to Doom 64 made it completely unplayable for me though which is why I was looking for a way to get the old version back. My usual settings didn't help at all.
And you are right, the method I used had to do with Steam depot.
That's a shame about the ports. I only have the Doom 64 and Quake ports from Nightdive. And Quake was where I first noticed the jittery-ness. You're right though that running the game at much higher framerates does reduce the problem a little bit. I found that 240fps even on a 144Hz monitor was a little bit less janky than native 144Hz.
It's especially obvious if you're used to running Quake through modern source ports like vkQuake or Quakespasm Spiked. Since those are essentially perfect with no visual jank at all.
Thanks for the graphics settings tips. I'll try that with the Quake port.

I tested it and you're right, this did fix the issue!
Thx for bumping this thread. :)
