Any chance to fix the music oddities (and odd door behavior)? [SOLVED]
According to this video, some of the game's music in this new port sounds off or in a different pitch than the original N64 version and can this be looked into among the other problems people are reporting with this new port (e.g. the broken DX11 rendering, the chaingun sprite offset errors, potential stuttering/frame-pacing problems)?

EDIT: I am seeing some weird problems with the doors too in this port on PC, like they suddenly close on you if you try to approach the doorway after opening the doors.

EDIT 2: The game for some reason has L Trigger mapped to both Sprint and Use buttons for some reason by default. I hope this oversight can be looked into my the dev team after reporting it on twitter.

I know that the future patch (once bethesda makes sure its stable) fixes the chaingun sprite offset. They believe the stuttering might be related to the sound cache, so that might be fixed. Also they do know about the music, but I didnt pay attention to see what was being done about that.

I hope they're looking into these issues, especially the DirectX 11 issue what messes up the pixel scaling because the game is using outdated and bugged DirectX shaders and doesn't make sense that we have to fix it ourselves by using a developer console to recompile the fixed one when it should already be working from the get-go.

EDIT: Apparently I'm hearing there's an issue where doors just close on you suddenly when trying to go through the doorways. Has anyone experienced something like this and can they attest whether this happened in the original N64 version or not?

I noticed all the music in the early levels at least are in Mono. A quick check on YoutTube for the original Nintendo version shows the soundtracks to be in Stereo. Bit of a bummer to say the least.
Blakjak Apr 7, 2020 @ 1:39pm
Instead of using a midi soundfont they should have recorded the music from the original game to mp3s or oggs and put those in the game. It would have been more accurate. But I guess they wanted to save storage space.

The music stutter is really disappointing. I hope they fix it asap.

Awesome game still!

This was the reply I got from Samuel via twitter:

I just failed to provide the most up to date DX11 shader, though there's a temporarily workaround for it. As for the music, there's nothing that can be done about the stereo/mono issue but I am currently looking at outputting the MIDI with the correct/disabled notes.
So far he doesn't seem to be aware of the weird door problem, so I am not sure if anyone can attest if it happens in Level 3: Main Engineering or some other places.
GamerXT Apr 8, 2020 @ 9:13pm
why cant they fix the stereo issue ? I think they should do what that other person says, rather than try using some authentic style music program, they should should just use regular music playback like ogg or flac, its not like the music changes during the level, it simply repeats itself

The music issue dates back to 64 EX. I'm not sure if they can patch it at this point, but if they can, off the top of my head it'd only affect The Rotted Foul (MAP20 Breakdown) unless anyone can think of any other BGM affected.

EDIT: Apparently Pitfalls is affected to, but I genuinely never noticed that. Interesting.

I've implemented my own workaround and replaced the appropriate .mid files in the doom64 wad using Slade, with an MP3 version of the soundtrack for Breakdown and Pitfalls. Obviously that won't work for console versions but will work for PC. If one wanted to get really creative, and they owned the 20th anniversary extended version of the Doom64 soundtrack by Aubrey Hodges, they could replace all the .mid files with the extended versions.

Are the MP3 versions also in stereo ? Maybe make all the soundtrack MP3 if thats true, never knew about those extended versions also

Is this something you can share or at least provide instructions on how to do it ourselves?

First of all, have the MP3 versions of the soundtracks for Breakdown (MAP 20) and Pitfalls (MAP 21) to hand. As this had been released officially by Aubrey Hodges, I'm not sure how else to get a hold of it legally apart from buying the whole album.

Rename the MP3s thus: "MUSAMB17.mp3" will be the MP3 for soundtrack to MAP 21 Pitfalls (Perfect Hate). "MUSAMB20.mp3" will be the MP3 for soundtrack to MAP 20 Breakdown (The Rotted Foul)

Download Slade from https://slade.mancubus.net/index.php?page=downloads

Run Slade, then go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and untick "IWAD LOCK"

Go to File > Open, and open the doom64 wad file that will be in the steam doom64 install directory

Search for these two files:
MUSAMB17 - Right click, and choose "Import", then select the "MUSAMB17.mp3" file as above. Repeat for MUSAMB20.

Go to File and Save the WAD, then exit.

This replaces MAP 20 and 21 BGM with precise Nintendo 64 versions of them.

To replace the music entirely with the 20th Anniversary OST here: https://aubreyhodges.bandcamp.com/album/doom-64-official-soundtrack-20th-anniversary-extended-edition

Again, as far as I know buying this album is the only legal way of obtaining it. Personally I'm in two minds whether some of the new SFX added to the original BGM really works, I think it's up to personal taste.

Open up the Doom64 wad in Slade again, and look for a file called "MAPINFO". This file will list which music lump (MUSAMBxx) plays on which maps, intros, ending, menu etc. Make a note of this somewhere, then replace the appropriate MUSAMBxx MIDI file in the WAD with MP3 versions just like before, remember to rename the MP3 equivalent to the same name.

Can anyone try this out in regards to the door issues I was hearing about? Stand in front of a door and try to mash the L Trigger and see if that causes the door to open and close. For some reason, the L Trigger being mapped to Speed/Sprint causes the game to think you're Use button.

EDIT: For some strange reason, the game's default bindings set the L Trigger of all places to Use on top of the being the Sprint button. I don't know why that is case, but I'm letting Samuel know about this goof and hoping this could be remedied.

Is there a full list of the game's MIDI files and their matching equivalent of the official soundtrack? I am wondering because we could so something akin to what modders are able to do with the recent Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection and swap the original music with the official remixes, although in this case we obviously can't share the files but we can at least instruct those that purchased the soundtrack to replace the MIDI with the higher-quality MP3s from said soundtrack.

Thank you very much! Once I can get a hold of the soundtrack from Hodge's bandcamp and get the game, I can experiment and see what could be done with implementing the soundtrack into the game.
