Obviously for doing that you need a fleet full of three-deckers with the right upgrades (that make your ships more efficient and less vulnerable, same for the crew when you're doing boarding) so that need some investments in terms of money and time, but when you're ready, gaining money isn't a problem anymore.
In my case, the fleet consist in captured ships only (so, free ships) but I've spent a good amount of money on upgrades and installing cost for every ships, but those upgrades are very useful in the long term (if you prioritize durability/HP, you take less damage/crew losses, so you spend less money in repairing/recruiting. In the same way, using bronze cannons allow your ships to do more damage, so become more effective and that = less time in combat to win, so less chance to take damage.
