GOD I loved Steel Panthers. pseudo squad level squad leader and unlike that annoying close combat series, turn-based. I didn't care that the emphasis was on armour I just wanted something drilled down to smaller units with sweet off map artillery. Here's hoping this game is as absorbing.

^ Still have the original boxed edition on my shelf. What a classic.
Ya I so wish we would see a new one, the amount of units and data in it was endless.

Second Front is definitely an innovative concept......but they absolutely have to get the **ai** to be competent....no,competitive,or else its all for naught....I wish I had a dollar for every wargame that had so much promise only to falter due to inferior ai in single player.

My concern is it ends up being a puzzle game. That's what I see happen to most games like this. Small tactical maps with more or less one "right" solution.
We need Gary Grigsby to get involved? :D

My understanding was that Steel Panthers WAS Squad Leader except Avalon Hill and Hasbro did not want nothing to do with it, so it went under a different name. Also, back in 2003, I was a scenario designer/play tester for Matrix Games and they had developed an engine that was pretty much ASL, but the game fizzled out, as did several titles from that era. From recollection there was some infighting with the owners at Matrix or at the least disagreements with the indie game developers and in house developers.

There's only so far you can make a PC game from a board game if the turn design requires numerous human to human interactions during a player turn. Steel Panthers was an incredible effort. They wouldn't even be making Steel Tigers if the Steel Panthers code wasn't so old now. Second Front will be the greatest thing since sliced bread if it equals Steel Panthers. Asking for better than Steel Panthers almost sounds greedy :)

I'm sensing more of a Battle Academy 3 vibe than Steel Panthers. I've played both extensively. BA2 remains my favourite title of all time and is still regularly used on my hard drive. Can't wait to download this.

My thoughts exactly. Been playing Steel Panthers for almost 2 decades now and this seems lie it would be a very worthy successor. Very exciting!

Looks a lot like tabletop BattleTech to me, but set in WWII.
