Program will be terminated.
When I start the game, I get the messege: Program will be terminated.
After that, it closes the game. How to fix this?

try doing the comp and then run the game from the steam app in stead of the icon in the game folder this might do the trick.

Ok guys, so basically I can confirm that I have the same results as 2 or 3 people above me who say nothing works.

Here is what was done(vista64):
-opened steam app directory from program files, found the game. Located two exe files. One soldiers.exe and another testapp.exe.
-first tried everything with the soldiers.exe. Tried to run in compatibility mode for XP(pack2), 2000, even 98. No result.
-on the bottom of window options windows made sure to try to set "settings for all users as well as for myself" Still see the error message.
-Tried each compatibility mode when trying to open from inside the Steam window. Error again.

Please, if anyone has any solutions let us know. I do realize it is $1.69 when I bought it. But its just a matter of principle. Steam or Codemasters, someone has to take some responsibility and if not return give us store credit, at least give a working solution. If you knew it was a buggy old game, then you shouldn't have put it on sale, or sell it at all.

Win7 64bit Ultimate here (2 days clean installation) - compatibility mode windows 2000 does the trick. Have fun.

Don't touch the testapp.exe - it is game spy arcade.
Apply win 2000 compatibility mode to soldiers.exe and voila - this is the only thing I did. Game will start, Game spy will start - cancel it, then actual game will resume.

XP doesn´´t work.
Actualy, it can work on compatibility with XP but only if you chose service pack 2 or 3 (i don't remember exactly)

The game works for me on Windows Vista (64bit). All I did was set the compatibility mode for soldiers.exe and testapp.exe to 'Windows 98 / Windows Me', and the game works just fine starting from steam, no need to start as administrator either. I can not remember if I tried Windows XP modes, might work as well. So if nothing seems to work, try setting compatibility mode for testapp.exe as well.

SAME PROBLEM DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!! AGGHGHGHGGH
ChunkyMonkey 26 września 2012 o 18:59
ok, finally worked. Had to set it to 98/xp mode and make sure to start from within Steam app.

Must say, I'd like to know how this game was perceived when it was released. It seems to be fun visually, but extremely cumbersome to control and get the soldiers or tanks to do what you want them to do.
Another issue, which I've seen before in old games running on newer com

Yep basically for me with Vista64 I set the soldiers exe and testapp to Win98 compatability found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Soldiers Heroes of World War 2. Then launched the game as normal thru steam an it worked perfect. Happy Face.

Yura i played this on release an loved it. IT basically the engine that thae Men of War series evolved but is more focused on smaller missions and more micro managment. And its Dang Hard.

Rebinding keys is highly recomended. The default are sorta unusable.

Had some of the best co op games with this little title. Stealth and teamwork being essential.

Plus so many options for destruction, for eg. 1st USA mission the guy in the wheat field has a box of matches - i wonder how that could come in handy vs those aproachin germans.....
