Windows 7 / 10?
Thinking of getting back into this having played many hours years ago with the vanilla game and some great mods that had been made but does it run on Windows 7 or 10?
(This has probably been asked before but I didn't see it in the first few pages).

Run but you need to force compatibility mode anyway and you won't be able to use Steam overlay anymore.

Thanks. I have it on CD; is it best to install from there then rather than Steam? I was thinking of buying it here as it is cheap as Steam would then update it but is that not the best option?
(Another thought: maybe it is better outside of Steam for installing all the mods too...?).

I have a problem with my install in Windows 7, maybe someone can help?
When I click on the desktop icon I get a pop-up window telling me "Confirmation" that the application installed correctly but I need to reboot to continue. I do this but always the same thing after re-boot; the game does not run, always this pop-up in a loop.
- I installed from my old game CD that was fine in XP years ago.
- I tried adjusting the compatiblity settings as described in other threads here and on the Guides tab regarding how to run in W7 (I do not get "App already running" as noted there).
- My desktop resolution is 1920x1080.

Got it running. I reinstalled and this time included the Gamespy Arcade option (which I do not particularly want so was side-stepping previously). It still needs a compatibility mode selected but it seems any will do - including the Windows 7 mode. Then it runs (App error if no mode is selected).

I have the Sold Out CD for this game. I have installed properly in Windows Vista, 7 and 10, had to run in compatibility mode with administrator privileges. Runs great on Win10 64bit with compatiblility set to Vista SP1
for the zombie lurkers, you can play this in 4K (with tiny UI) with the newer patch:
