Discussion on Ending (Spoilers Obviously)
Do we ever find out what the note says or is it one of those situations where we never find out? I suppose the latter would make sense because it lets the imagination run wild as to what it could have said and if it played any part in the girl's decision to end her life as well.

So I can’t exactly remember, but I think the note is somewhat legible. Maybe someone could translate? I’d be interested in knowing too.

The text on the note is very hard to read.

Okay, what do we know about the whole story?

The girl gets back home. She and her mother have moved there only a few days before.

Her mother is not feeling well lately.

In the mini-safe the girl (you) will find a debt. The most likely idea is: the mother has money problems and got money from a bank.

But since this is a japanise horror game, you could dig deeper into the story, culture and folklore... maybe it is a contract the mother has with a demon or any bad, terrible power or beeing.

The mother kills herself and so does the girl in the end. Why does the girl kills herself in a strange temple in the woods where a rope is already waiting for her? That's more than strange...

Do you remember the bloody eyes of the mother? I don't think that this is "usuall" when killing yourself by hanging... maybe there is more to the whole story I can't recognize as a European (not Japanese) guy.

In Anime movies or Manga comics there are many allusions to cultural things you won't recognize, too... if you don't know Japanise culture.

++++

So, anybody else out there with thoughts about the story?

I like to read from you. :steamhappy:

I think the ending is taking place in the Aokigahara forest, a place where a lot of people are going to kill themselves by hanging. The game seems to talk about the suicide epidemy in japan, because of social and financial preasures. :scaryforest:

There are few strange details I've already asked about in my own topic but no one seems to know.
Story is obviously about a mother who committed suicide due to debt. Mother was depressed or worried ("not feeling well lately").

Little enigmatic details:

1 - ravens or crows are circling above the house. Possibly symbolizing death or tragedy?

2 - at midnight someone is leaving password numbers around the house. Probably mother's ghost? If so, why wouldn't she just leave the numbers in one place for us? (i understand this may be for gameplay reasons so we have to go around and explore the house)

3 - we hear a "stray cat" at the ground floor. What does it mean?

4 - upon leaving the living area for the first time and heading back upstairs we hear loud banging noise. It sounds to me like it's coming from the bathroom where mother is hanged. What is that noise? I even thought that's the moment she commited suicide but that would mean she was still alive and locked in bathroom when we arrived home. Hard to believe that though.

5 - why is the living area turned upside down at night time? I doubt it's just for shock value, but who knows...

6 - why are there suddenly papers scattered on the ground floor during the night? Like, what would that mean?

7 - bathroom doors are knocked open. Why? Why aren't they just unlocked like rest of the doors?

8 - I believe girl went to that famous suicide forest in Japan. But why is there a rope and chair already ready for her?

My take is that I don't think we're supposed to understand the details. It's just about seeing this completely normal girl go from happy to dead in the span of a few hours. The ending is shocking and abrupt because that's how these things happen.

It's probably also the most bleak and depressing of Chilla's games (which is saying something) but I think leaving the audience angry at what happened was kind of the point.

Even after all this time I still think about the game. I just played their latest title The Bathhouse and though there are several scary jump scares, none affected me as much as Okaeri. I agree it's their most depressing game.
