If you know you're about to get hit by an enemy in a crowd, don't be afraid to use the spin kick to get them off. Even if it sacrifices some HP, that's better than getting hit and having the HP taken away anyway.
Dealing with the aliens at the end of the beach segment is annoying, but I think if you scroll the screen in tiny increments, it can be possible to trigger just one of the aliens before the other two join in, maybe that can help.
Also I recommend playing as Jay and upgrading attack power immediately after level 1, and mostly sticking to punch combos. Throws are too weak to be your primary way of dealing with enemies, even as Amy who has the best throw stat. And items are generally not too helpful either.
Throws can be useful to get a crowd away from you, but for the most part, the basic punch combo is the absolute best way to deal with the vast majority of enemies. It helps if you can learn the timing for avoiding the kick finisher from coming out - hit four times, wait, hit four times, wait - it's better than constantly kicking them away from you.

If you're out of idea, check a speedrun on Youtube, it'll show you what key reflexes/instincts you're missing at the moment.
