UFO 50

How many sprites are reused across games?
it's been a fun little easter egg hunt to spot places where sprites have been reused. In the context of UFOsoft having been an ahead of their time company in the 80's it is a generally modern practice that I can't think of too many examples in the NES era, the only two that come to mind are Mario 2 on the famicom (which was more or less a level pack for Mario 1 anyways) and Final Fantasy 2 on Famicom which reuses the fighter player sprite.

Ironically a more common reuse of assets within' the same game (Goombas being repurposed mushrooms with added feet, recolored enemy sprites in JRPGS ect.) is less common within UFO 50, the only example I can think of is recolored enemy sprites in zoldath 2, though I'm sure there are others.

Anyhow enough of my rambling, here's a list of sprites I found reused and the games they are used in, in as close to an order as I can recall them in.

Barbuta Eggs: Origin...Barbuta. Repurposed in Mooncat...I presume, I haven't actually beaten it yet. Caramel Caramel in the prologue stage as objects you can photograph in the background, The Big Bell Race in the character selection screen. considering Barbuta's place in the cronology and in secret hunting there may or may not be some significance to eggs and where they show up.

The Campanella: Origin...Campanella (The ship makes it's first appearance in Zoldath 1, but the particular sprite that you pilot is the one that is reused). Repurposed in the Big Bell Race and Campanella 2. the Campanella also makes easter egges in various other games, although with it's differing size in each I'm not sure how many of these are reused or are originally made for each game.

Pilot player sprite: Origin Zoldath 2, repurposed in the intro cinematic.

Flashy projectile (updated): Origin Zoldath 1, Repurposed in Porgy and seaside drive...not the most exciting or revealing sort of thing, but one I noticed.

Large Pill: Origin Warp tank, repurposed in Mooncat.

And that's all that can come to mind from what I've looked through. feel free to leave any other examples I missed.

The flower sprites are in a few games, originally (I believe) starring in Mooncat and then making it's way to warp tank, which the two games actually seem to share quite a few sprites as well as mimic things like the flowers showing where secrets are. and I believe in Rakshaska the weird three holed rock from Mooncat is used as a rock tile in the backgrounds fairly often too!

they really love that one screen transition noise, it's in so many games

Even some boss themes are reused among games :sans:

Sometimes sprites are not re-used directly, but characters are referenced or reused. Mini and Max doesn't reuse anything, but has references to MANY other games. As does Sqibble Race

I thought Mini and Max used (spoiler: first ending) a bunch of Party House sprites since you're going right through one of those parties. Old friends, rowdy guests, monkeys, etc. It definitely re-uses the music too.

The Campanella pilots are definitely on the title screen. The gray one's the pilot in Campanella 2 (And at a second glance, I think that's the same sprite as when she sasses you in Pilot Quest)

It's a bit of an easter egg, but there's a crashed campanella in Golfaria. Same sprite as Pilot Quest, scaled down.

Oh and the coffee too. I think it's the same sprite in Ninpek, Campanella and Warptank.

Oh, and not a re-use (or even an internal reference) but a pretty clear reference to Mother 2 in Pilot Quest. (spoiler: cherry ending) The donka donka idol is basically the mani mani statue, minus having to fight it multiple times.

Oh, found another one. The coffee room in Warptank has one of the Ninpek snails just chilling out.

Some of the cars from Paint Chase show up as enemies in Elfazar's Hat, complete with leaving paint trails.

There are some diamond-shaped enemies in Campanella that show up again in Caramel Caramel.
FYI, the first game to have Pilot with his latest design was actually Big Bell Race.

I like how the reused and remade sprites of familiar enemies/characters add to a cohesive motif, while also being a reference to the cheap/low effort multi-cart games with reused sprites, as well as the silly, intentionally unimaginative, titles of the games.

The little green one-eyed winged demons in the first area of Velgress are also the power you get from the green egg in Rakshasa

The cars in Fist Hell and Cyber Owls are the same

They don't reuse the sprite, but the basic demons from Devilition show up as enemies in Grimstone, still doing the hands-over-head pose.

I'm not through it, so can't rule out that this isn't some sort of interconnected lore, but the cave in Divers with the parasite hammer: What's with the super-dark area in the middle, and why is Barbuta's helmet/head in there?

Keep playing. You'll want to keep an eye out for things like this, as well as what goes on at the very end of the game. You're correctly picking up on an interconnected aspect.

oh right! The DIVERS chests and the waldorf's journey chests are the same sprite, I think!
