UFO 50
Campanella 2
I like this one a lot. Been playing it a bunch since I cracked into it, but haven't beaten it, yet. Please share tips and information (and please tag secrets and endgame spoilers).

I usually lose by running out of fuel (or by not realizing I didn't enter the saucer and jumping to my death, heh). Is there a more effective way to search for stars? I think noting the location of the exit door helps (if you happen to find it early), so you know how far you have to fly after you get the last star. I've also tried searching the higher areas first, when I still have a lot of fuel, and then I can drift downward without using fuel to look for more stars.

I try to take the "more coins" power-up ASAP (the one with the red border and arrow). That one seems really good. What other power-ups do you like? The winged shoes seem pretty useless since you can only use them during the platformer stages. Some of the gun power-ups are fun, but the platformer stages tend to be pretty easy relative to the saucer stages, so maybe saucer power-ups are more important.

What's up with the blue aliens that tell you to "look for a sage"? I thought I needed to deliver a message to a particular door on that stage, but so far I've never found one.

The best power up hands down is the Fuel Skull one which gives you fuel when you kill enemies. Not only does it incentivise killing enemies it makes exploring so much easier since you have a more consistent way to get fuel than just the stars.
The Saucer powerups are pretty good especially for the later 2 levels, the ranges slash and bouncing laser makes killing the more problematic enemies a lot easier. That said I think there's utility in the gun power-ups especially the dual laser and split shot that makes little projectiles that crawl on the ground, walls and ceilings.
Anyway all it takes is one good run, if you're running low on fuel just go for stars instead of looking for red doors or the shop. I think the game's random generation can be ruthless but keeping this all in mind and you should have a winning run in no time.

I really like this game too, and look forward to beating it although there's a couple games I want to play more first (but that's just how this game is).

It feels like you're on the razor's edge the whole time. The only strats I've found out are searching up first, so that you can collect stars while falling to save fuel and don't have to spend fuel to climb for stars (edit, saw you mentioned that).

I also like taking the coin powerup cause shop items are way more meaningful than the basic upgrades you get from progression. So it's just a matter of not taking damage or wasting fuel, so that you don't have to replenish those from the clams. But there's definitely RNG involved.

As far as the sages, I'm assuming you get something important if you bring those blue scrolls to them. Maybe something to do with the cherry requirement.

Is it advised to go to all the red doors? I've only hit the second level so far (where you can choose a path), but you die so insanely easily I have a hard time imagining ever beating this game.

I thought thats passive poisen damage or something! Thanks for the info :D

I take the money up power as soon as possible and it's 100% worth it! Got to the 4th stage, so I hope I can beat the game this week xD

Thanks! I didn't know what that one did, either. Thought it might be something like that. I had bought it before, but died shortly after.

Good to know someone else had the same idea.

In my experience, no, you can't really afford to waste fuel looking for doors. You just have to hope to get lucky and run across them while you're gathering stars.

Does anyone know what the cross amulet does? I thought it might extend timer after getting all stars or might make the enemy that chases you in the platforming sections slower but I can’t seem to find any differences in behavior.

I want to know that, too.

I did figure out that those "spinners" that appear when the exit sequence starts give you +200 fuel when you pass through them, and also pause the countdown timer for a couple of seconds.

Found a compass in one of the shops. It points the way to the exit door (even before the exit sequence starts) and also points the way to the green shop door. Seems kind of handy.

Went to Temple Grounds for the first time. That seems like a spooky and difficult stage. The flying sections are full of long dead-end corridors. I think I found three stars before I ran out of fuel. It's also full of doors that apparently lead to empty rooms. Maybe there's some secret to those.

I think the damage by enemies is a bit overtuned. You can take 3-4 in the side-scrolling stages which is basically instant death.

Got to what I believe is the true final boss.
He beat my butt and I lost all focus afterward. Can't even make it to the final world anymore.

Still I love it and will grind on

I focused on spread shot or fuel skull for shop upgrades. Prioritized Key -> health -> fuel in side areas. Fuel is pretty easy to come by, but health is not. Sometimes the stage gen just screws you though and you'll burn half your fuel before seeing a star. Those are just resets unfortunately. I think the star placement could use some tweaking.

I'm really enjoying this one so far. Great, addictive loop that keeps me wanting to play more! I do think it's pretty brutal, though. Like, in a way that makes me think of the days when devs would make a game harder on purpose to keep people from beating it on a rental. Getting hit by almost anything takes 3+ hit points, and you get no health restoration between stages at all. Still, very fun concept.

This is easily my least favorite game in the whole collection by a country mile, without good rolls for fuel management you're completely at the mercy of level generation on later stages
Ottfried Oct 12, 2024 @ 10:34pm
I could think of a LOT worse games in the collection.

BTW does anyone know what the "cross" and money shot upgrade do?

I got the cross twice, but couldn't trigger anything special.
Money shot I only had once and died right after

Money shot lets you tap the shoot button in walking areas to fire a charge shot that costs 1 coin.
