Porgy is what I wished Jaws on the Amiga was
Yeah, I know it's based on Castlevania, but playing through Porgy, I couldn't help but think back to playing Jaws on the Amiga and how disappointing that was. Like Porgy, it was a side-scrolling sub game where you go deeper and deeper, the intent being to collect a harpoon (from memory) capable of killing Jaws.

Jaws was the first game I owned on the Amiga (think it was a bday pressie for turning 9 XD) Even back then, it was pretty obvious that it wasn't a great game. I absolutely loved everything sharks, but yeah, that was frustrating.

After beating Porgy though, I feel like I can say I've healed from my submarine side-scroller trauma and can now get on with my life! :)

I am a huge Castlevania fan who has played every game in the series. and not a single time during my Porgy playthrough did I ever think anything was even vaguely similar to Castlevania. So I'm not sure what you mean to be honest.

But regardless of that. I think I'll look up gameplay footage of Amiga Jaws, it might be interesting. :)

eh, I thought the whole hiding objects in walls randomly and progression was based on early Castlevania games, but I've never actually played them so not 100% sure. Someone else mentioned it on here so I just went with that.

Metroid was the really the game that created the genre.
Castlevania 2 was a litle like that, but it was not a very good game. All other early Castlevania were action plarformers.
The series became a "metroidvania" (and clearly defined the genre) with Symphony of the Night on Playstation.
