Barbuta shouldn't be the default game
Barbuta isn't bad, but it sucks donkey balls at giving a good first impression. I think Ninpek should be the default game on the collection.

It makes sense in the way that it is Ufosoft's first game. So in the chronological order it is first. It's definitely not one of the greatest games in the list.
Maybe an additional visual effect like an outline or icon around the best received games would guide sceptical players to those and give a better first impression.
For me personally I want to go through them chronologically and experience the lessons learned from one game to the next. But not everyone is as patient as me.

I would have put bug hunter 1st for this reason but I get what they were going for

Maybe the "epic play" games could be visually marked? That way you can clearly see which games are the substantial ones without needing to change the filter/sort.

From a chronological and historical (in-game) perspective it makes sense that it's the least technical and least "exciting" game of the bunch.

It's experimental storytelling, you are experiencing the progression of not only technological advancements, but also improvements in art, game mechanics, sound/music design, and how the developers worked together at a fictional game studio.

barbuta is good

Part of the story of the collection is the evolution of the games, Barbuta introduces simple gaming concepts, Ninpek further expands on these ideas as well as the technology and introduces scrolling. There's tiny little things like this that really paint and breathe life into the picture the devs have painted here.

I see it like it's Atari Adventure for the Atari 2600, as rudimentary as an adventure game could be. Barbuta has basically the same gameplay. There was another game more like it, I can't remember what it was. It had a minimap like Barbuta, and you had to find objects that you had to leave in specific rooms to complete quests.

If you are turned off by Barbuta's graphics, I'd question why you bought UFO50 anyway.

Good games in retro style is the entire point.

Apparently there is a mysterious magical force preventing certain players from scrolling past the first game. They might be beyond the powers of the devs to aid them.

It's good it's the first game, it immediately sets the stage for what is ahead + narrativewise it builds upon things in that game for the future ones. Also it's funny how much it upsets people.

barbuta sucks but it also sets expectations for the collection. like "this is about weird old game style games with flaws and interesting mechanics". this does a couple things: if the user is intrigued at all, they will look at the next game. by having the worst game first, you set expectations and all the other games will feel better by comparison. (they feel better because they feel better but they also feel better by comparison). expectation setting also helps people make a purchase decision. most people refunding at barbuta and bug hunt probably arent even mad, which will help keep the overall review score high.

thats the reasons i would see to put barbuta first, besides the in game lore reason.

man Bertolli basically just said the same thing with 20% of the words

Barbuta ... does not suck! It's really good! People are truely judging a game by it's first few seconds. People really are really sleeping on it
