Unfortunately it's a "get good" situation. You really need to maximize your points per level, so killing problem enemies ASAP and painting as much as possible is your only goal. Scoring high on easier levels will give you more leeway on harder levels, but getting 555 is a real feat regardless so I wish you luck.

Remember that you can pick up a power-up a second or even third time if the tile beneath it gets painted red by an enemy after you've picked it up the first time. I would never have gotten the cherry if I hadnt't figured this out. A very important strategy on some levels.

My reply unfortunately boils down to 'learn the level', as the biggest tip I can tell you is to intentionally let some enemies roll over the paint, drone, and time stop power ups so you can use them multiple times.

Speed boosts stack. So if you do a square dance over a boost pad a couple times, then you're really zooming. Can also do this with the level with the purple bounce orbs.

White slugs are high priority since they spawn additional red slugs. That said, combined with the above tip, I let some live occasionally so they'd go over a power up.

It's possible to get a solid 40+ on the first two levels, so maybe practice those to get a solid start.

Out of my attempts I've been way below, or barely met the cherry goal but ran out of lives, then one next time I do amazing and score almost 100 over the cherry requirement.
