Have you tried verifying your files? (Go to the game in Steam, click the cog icon then "Properties", go to "Installed files", and click "Verify Integrity of files", or whatever it is.)
Either way, you may want to post this in the Bug Reports section rather than General Discussions.
That, and a few others, mention an issue with audio routing software, specifically Wavelink. Anyone having the issue running that?

My comment on that thread (hope it works for ya! Make sure to copy your save to another location if it works so you have a backup plan!):
Just found this Reddit post, tried it, and it worked for me! I'd just be careful and instead of deleting what it says to delete, do what I did and create a new folder to store it in, just in case!
Here's the post I followed:
I had this happen and lost my saved game. There is a backup of the saved game in ...\AppData\Local\ufo50\backup\
Close UFO 50
Take the last save1_[number].bak file in that directory and copy it into ...\AppData\Local\ufo50\
Delete save1.ufo
Rename the copied file to save1.ufo
Start UFO 50
Steam will tell you there's a conflict and offer cloud or local, choose local. Saved file is back.
If the last save1_[number].bak file doesn't work, try the number before it, etc., until you find one with your backed up save file on it (that doesn't crash).
@UnluckyLeo
Was just gonna check back in to see if that solution worked for you! Hoping it does!
