There are exceptions that you probably want to keep, most of them are accessories that give special bonuses outside of energy/magic power/cap/bar, like drop chance, gold drops, yggdrasil yield/seeds or NGU speed.
Accessories are usually worth keeping for a little while longer as they give bonuses that are situational. The Sands of Time are very useful for killing Titans, that's the first truly valuable item that you hold onto for a long time.
You can also unlock more item slots through spending xp, ap, pp, etc. As you collect more valuable items you need to start buying slots to keep up. Also, once you unlock auto-boosting and auto-merging, item slots become a lot more useful.
