It isn't something you can afford until you grabbed most of the useful stuff but the AP store has quite a few inventory slots as well (the cost goes up as you get more so it's a waste of AP early on but later when you don't really have much to get from there anymore it's a good way to sink a lot of AP for something useful).
Early on, buy some slots with EXP, or buy a 10 pack for 12 inventory slots (but don't buy those slots with AP, save AP for hearts instead)
When 50 inventory slots in 3 days means something to you is when you should probably do that set.
I know I know. Meta. Golden path. W/E. Games are supposed to be fun so do the challenges when you feel you'll benefit from them.
I only mentioned them because it's the quickest way to gain that many slots without paying, at the point in the game it's being asked.
