Land isn't strictly necessary if you find a good place to plant in the wild, but of course that's rolling the dice every time and it's game over the moment hackers show up on your server.
Ultimately it's a question of how much gold you can get per LP, and the basic rates for just processing raw materials from the auction house can be very competitive considering the lack of time cost.
Cactus seeds from the vocation shop might be a better source for dried flowers, and it's worth stockpiling the materials for a full vehicle load of packs so you can react quickly to temporary high prices.
I think some people bother with scrubby trade packs because their main goal is raising vocation skills and the auction house ain't buying, so at least it's an NPC shop that pays enough to break even.
