Your Fellow Traveler in "Deeper Sleep": Autistic Daydreamer?
Yes, this may well be the case! What made me think of this possibility is the series finale of "St. Elsewhere", in which the entire show turned out to be the figment of the imagination of an autistic boy who, day after day, stared into a snow globe that contained a miniature replica of St. Elegius Hospital.

In the traveler's case, his autistic daydream is so deep that he has actually managed to detach his mind from his body; and because of this, he, like the traveler YOU play as, is vulnerable to attacks by the Shadow People. See, the Shadow People (a.k.a. Night Folk) attack when they detect a mind detached from its body. This is why this Traveler is hiding behind a grated arch. He's hiding from the Shadow People. Yet, he also doesn't want to leave Dreamland. Also, while this Traveler is quite eloquent in speech within Dreamland, in the Waking World, he might be a non-verbal, low-functioning autistic.

You should play Don't escape 4, a different game of the same developer. It kind of explains what can cause it. Also, a new part of deep sleep is planned, so it will probably be explained further there.
