That sounds serious where it, of course, should give bonuses to realm creatures...
But if you are thinking about not in the nodes, and around the nodes, it should be right adjacent to the nodes...

Patch code:
Instructions:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/1146370/discussions/0/2992044018022803090/ (last post, naturally you need to use this patch code instead, and the version folder will be "Master of Magic Community Patch")
Slitherine's been sitting on the fix for over a month now... =/
Yes, but there was no actual update to the Community Patch at that time for some reason.
I copied and pasted the code from above into a file called 'nodefix.txt', a rich text document, in the community patch directory. I thought I followed the steps you laid out. I included the comment line, I don't think that should mess anything up. I started the game from a file on my desktop instead of the steam application, again I wouldn't think that would matter.
A rich text document will not work either, it needs to be plain text, not just in its extension, but also in content. Make sure you open it with notepad, not wordpad. If that's what you already did, then that's OK, the patching would have done nothing because the addresses are out of range for magic.exe. But if you did the copy+paste in wordpad, then you may need to restore or re-download your magic.exe if your editor settings are not the default (if they are, then FILESET will again have done nothing but crash with an error which you wouldn't see).
Unfortunately getting stuff to work in Notepad is a pain - I had to find it, I looked online, it is under 'windows accessories' (i'm using Windows 10, apparently this is a common issue). I use Open Office - every time I save a file though, it is in open office. I did tell Open Office saved as a text file.
I did open dosboxMOM_single in notepad (somehow) and changed the second last line as you indicated. This time, when I ran the game, it didn't close in step 10. The game played as normal.
That's only possible if the "dosboxMOM_single.conf" file did not save for some reason, or if the "magic.exe" line was not replaced in it. Now that I think about it, you could just insert the "fileset wizards.exe nodefix.txt" line above it instead of replacing "magic.exe", but then you will have no indication of whether everything is happening as it should: the game will also run as normal. If I remember correctly, installing DOSBox automatically associates the .conf extension with notepad, so it opens with that by default.
I'm also using Windows 10. If I had text files associated with OpenOffice, then I would probably try to right click on them, choose "Open with >" from the popup menu, and select notepad from there - or else pick "Choose another app" from the second menu and see if I can find it among those. However, I do happen to have OpenOffice installed myself, and using "File"->"Save as...", and then selecting "Text (.txt) (*.txt)" from the "Save as type" dropbox did save the file in the correct format for me, so I'll assume that it does for you too.
PS: You don't need to keep thanking me. I'm not going anywhere, and will keep trying to help you until you either succeed or give up. Or until Slitherine manages to finally push the patch =P
I know you said not to thank you, but I really do appreciate the help the team has made in MoM and CoM - made perhaps my favorite computer game of all time even better - much better!
