Coop Taking over the game from Player1

Today I played again as Player2 in a game, I was invited in. But somehow the original Player had to "rejoin" by pressing space instead of me joining by using my controller. So we switched characters and I took control of the menu and the game of Player1 and I was the one, that needed to quit the game.

Was/is this intended?
