Is only me constantly failing? Is there a vid-guide for the exceptional stupid (I must be - wasted all lure, got zero fish)?

no, others struggle as well. if you are using a controller, i cant offer advice, but what i do wtih a mouse is just hold down the button and slide the mouse left or right to keep the box on the fish. works well enough.

aaah, after some try n error (and worms gone for good) I think I got the knack of it... I think the tutorial could be bit more precise, especially about the clicking-orgy necessary for hauling in your catch

Just hold the button while keeping the box on the fish i the bar.

You can also hold down the space bar on a keyboard, I find it easier than holding a mouse button while moving the mouse.
