Fishing frustration
I was very eager to play the new update but... I found the beach, talked to Hikari twice and got the fishing rod. Tried to leave the pier and a message popped up that I needed to return the rod. But when I spoke with her again there was no option for that. So I tried fishing at least a dozen times and had no luck whatsoever with that either! Is there I trick to it? And why can't I leave the pier? Wasted a whole damned day when I had to just quit.

You need to catch a fish (and then she will let you keep the rod). I found fishing tricky at first, once the fishing mini-game starts I found it easier to hold down the left mouse button (I'm on PC :) ..) and then concentrate of keeping the bar over the fish. Good luck!

OK, I'll try that the next time I play (I'm also on a pc, but I'm also an ancient crone so some stuff is harder than other stuff). LOL I appreciate knowing that I need to 'try' to keep the bar over the fish.

I updated the game but I don't know where this new content is. I walked everywhere and there is no beach.

It's south of Bob's place.

Just tried fishing again, still can't manage it. I guess I'll go back to play Winkeltje: The Little Shop some more.

Same here. Don't know if it's because of the lag (bc I play on a kinda crappy pc) but fishing is too hard for me. I feel like the bar barely goes up when I am on the fish and when I am not on it it goes down way to fast. It could also be because I suck at the game though lol I fished until like 4am and just gave up then
Can't imagine what your problems with fishing might be...worked like a charm after one or two failed attempts...as far as I can tell, you've got to press the appropriate button when the float or bobber (that seems to be correct word for the thingy attached to the line floating on the water - I'm not a native speaker) is fully under water. The mini-game in which you have to keep the little bar on the fish seems to work far better with a mouse, my daughter was struggling doing it with a controller. Maybe that helps...

I think the problem with the fishing mini game part is the mouse lag some people (including me) get. When attempting to follow the mini game its hella hard to get it over the fast moving fish in time so you just end up missing which makes the green line go down super fast. I don't know if its computer side issue or game side issue and some people have no issues and it even may just be an optimization thing for now.

And yeah if you can't catch a fish during the fishing tutorial you cannot leave the dock or even sleep so the only thing you can do is basically quit the game to reload the day. I'm still trying to catch that first fish XD maybe ill get lucky eventually haha.

The Hikari's tutorial is a little short on explanations. If you are playing on a gamepad, you can move the bar with the L stick. If you are using a mouse, you will notice right away that you can move the bar, but if you are using a gamepad, you will have to look at the Encyclopedia to find out.

This fishing minigame isn't bad as far as they go. I've never caught a single fish with Stardew's minigame, but I've only missed a couple of times here.

That being said, why must there be one? There aren't minigames for gathering other resources--a chance of failure, perhaps, but it's pretty straightforward to just do the interaction.

And with all the other chores being heaped on, it really cuts into time. A time investment into a minigame that no one enjoys and many actively hate isn't the way to go here.

For me it's too much clicking to get the dang fish and having to move the mouse a lot side to side to keep up with said fish. I had to stop playing yesterday due to feeling pain in my wrist!

Got it first try (I usually like fishing mini-games), but the time spent on it doesn't pay back the trouble. I think that is far better to buy the fish from her and use the time with my other way too many chores that I already have to do.

Wait, you can simply buy the fish from her without the rod? I don't recall that in the initial conversation with her.

Not at first, you'll have to catch the first fish/trash. Next day the shop opens.

The stock is quite random, but still better than loosing time.

Don't click repeatedly, just click-and-hold, and slide the box from side to side while holding the button down to keep the bar over the fish. If you try to click repeatedly the green bar fills up extremely slowly and you'll probably lose the fish.
