I am a bit confused by what tone you are actually looking for by your question. I'm guessing the quotes around 'serious' are being used like air quotes as Graveyard Keeper isn't serious at all, it's dark/gallows humor - very tongue-in-cheek (granted, I only played the base game as I found the mechanics grindy), but in print it's hard to tell for sure. I'd say Stardew Valley is much more actually serious as, beneath the happy veneer there is some major Peyton Place stuff going on (adultery, PTSD w/flashbacks, alcoholism, borderline stalking, parental neglect/abandonment, government mismanagement, drug use, etc).
Or, maybe I'm reading too much into your question.
I'd say, maybe look into Cult of the Lamb. At this point, this is not the tone you are looking for.
Then check MachiaVillain. Tho it's main developer got eyes cancer so game is unfinished. Not a joke.
I love Graveyard Keeper, but I wouldn't compare it to Travellers Rest.
Try Sun Haven, Serin Fate, or Lobotomy Corporation if you enjoy macabre fantasy style.
